Child of the King!

No Waiting Necessary

Prince Charles Turning 60, Becomes Longest-Waiting Heir in British History

Talk about an apprentice. By the time he turns 60 Friday, Prince Charles will have spent 56 years waiting to become king.

LONDON - That's put him in quite a bind. The longest-waiting heir in British history only ascends to the throne when his beloved mother dies or decides to step down.

But the queen won't be giving Charles the present many believe he craves most - the crown. The queen has indicated informally that she plans to keep the job for life and some people think the 82-year-old monarch intends to live forever, or at least as long as her mother, who died at 101.

Galatians 3:29

And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and now all the promises God gave to him belong to you. (NLT)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about being an heir to the throne?

"The original promise to Abraham was intended for the whole world, not just for Abraham's descendants. All believers participate in this promise and are blessed as children of Abraham." (Life Application Bible Study Note for Gal. 3:29)

But we are not just children of Abraham. Romans 8:16-17 says, "For his Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God's children. And since we are his children, we will share his treasures - for everything God gives to his Son, Christ, is ours, too." And we don't have to wait until we get to heaven to enjoy those treasures - a relationship with Jesus, forgiveness for us, the gift to be able to forgive others, and a life that will last forever.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

Obviously, Prince Charles has lived a life worthy of his position. But, he became an heir to the throne at his birth. And you became an heir of God's Kingdom at your spiritual birth, when you began a relationship with Jesus Christ. Even though we won't receive our full inheritance until we are in our heavenly home, we can rest in God's promise NOW! No waiting!

  • Thank God for adopting you into His forever family.
  • Thank God for the gift of His forgiveness.
  • Ask God to show you if there is anyone you need to forgive.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story, and our story to others?

  • If you see Prince Charles in the news today, use that as a conversation starter with a friend who needs Jesus.
  • Ask a friend if they've ever had to wait for what seemed like forever for something they were promised - then use that as a point to begin a conversation about God's promises.
  • Ask a friend for their permission to share your story, or even better, God's Story with them this weekend.
  • Pray for your friends who have yet to be adopted into God's family.
