Keeping it all together?

The "rubber band man" can!

Man builds 3,300-pound rubber band ball

With all due respect to The Spinners and T.I., prepare yourself for the new rubber-band man. Steve Milton, through concentration and perseverance, has created a 3,300-pound ball comprised of rubber bands. His creation measures almost 5 feet tall and takes up half his two-car garage. Though it's not official, the 26-year-old Eugene man believes he has broken the record for the heaviest such ball, eclipsing John Bain's mark of 3,120 pounds. The Wilmington, Del., man's record has stood for eight years.

Milton has posted updates of his ball's growing girth on his MySpace page. He's also uploaded videos of the ball crushing things, such as using a forklift to drop the ball on an old van.

"It was awesome," Milton told The Register-Guard newspaper. "It completely flattened the roof and blew the doors off."

Milton started building the ball last November. He bought rubber bands at retail stores and then started purchasing in bulk from the Pennsylvania-based Dykema Rubber Band Company.

Dykema president Lou McKibben said he realized Milton was serious when he got an order for 1,000 pounds of 12-inch rubber bands. He cut him a deal on the remaining 2,000 pounds.

Milton, who wants to stretch the ball at least another 1,000 pounds, said the work isn't all that safe. Milton is careful to keep the ball contained with blocks of wood so it doesn't roll away. He wears gloves to avoid burning his hands from friction and learned to move when a band breaks.

"If they snap they come off pretty fast," he said. "They've given me welts before."

Colossians 1:15-17

The Preeminence of Christ

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (ESV)

What does today's God's Story teach us about the connection between Christ and creation?

When I saw today's story about the guy creating the gihugic ball of rubber bands, I was impressed. At first we might wonder why anyone would do this? Does he have a real life or job? Then when you think about it, you wonder what holds it together? (I can hardly get four rubber bands to stay together!)

Then I got to thinking about planet earth being like a gihugic ball and maybe you're like me - I get blown away at how this mass of life holds together!

This is what today's scripture is all about! Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God - He created everything and He holds everything together by His power. All of creation, including us, was made for God's purposes and pleasure.

Why did the "rubber band man" create that big ball? Because he wanted to and he could! Plus, he enjoys being noticed.

Why did Christ create the world and you and me? Because He wanted to and He could! Plus, He enjoys us and He wants the world to notice His glory!

Since Christ holds everything together, we can not be independent from Him. Our response must be to daily trust Him for protection and for direction. Jesus will hold us together as we abide in Him. This obedience brings Christ glory.

Let's finish with the rubber band analagy: when you feel like life is stretching you to the max and maybe you've snapped a few times, remember that Christ will keep holding you together!

How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?

  • Talk to Jesus right now. Confess to Him your lack of trust in Him when life is stretching you. Ask Jesus to give you the faith you need to live in the reality of the truth that He holds everything together.
  • Every day, thank Jesus that "all things were created through Him and for Him".
  • Start your own rubber band ball creation as a reminder to trust Christ to keep holding your life together.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?

Snap your friends with rubber bands! (NO, I'M JUST KIDDING!) Use today's story about the "rubber band man" to start a conversation about God's creation and His power to hold everything together. Remember to ask questions and listen rather than give a lecture. You could ask someone in your storysphere, "Do you ever wonder how this big ball of earth is held together? (Listen....)
