Brazil to pay compensation to US pastor tortured, expelled in 1974 under military regime
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) _ The Brazilian government has promised to pay compensation to a U.S. pastor who was arrested, beaten and tortured in 1974 under the former military dictatorship.
The Rev. Frederick Birten Morris of the United Methodist Church will be compensated 285,000 reals (US$154,000) plus a monthly pension of 2,000 reals (US$1,080), the Justice Ministry said on its Web site.
The decision was made Friday night by the Justice Ministry's Amnesty Commission, which is reviewing the cases of victims from the 1964-1985 dictatorship.
During 16 days in captivity in an army barracks, Morris was beaten and tortured with electric shocks several times before being released and deported.
A government study last year found that 475 people were killed or disappeared at the hands of security forces during the military regime.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about persecution?
In today's passage we see Paul explaining to young Timothy that he had undergone many trials as a result of his connection to Jesus. In 2 Corinthians 11:23-29 Paul offers a long list of these difficulties. It includes being beaten, whipped, sleepless, hungry, near death and thrown in prison just to name a few. Because of his love for Christ, Paul was willing to go through anything.
Paul was also promising to Timothy that this same persecution would come his way if he was going to live a Godly life. Jesus promised all of His followers the same thing in John 15:20 when He said, "If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also."
How can I connect God's Story scripture to my story?
- First of all, ask God to give you the strength to stand strong during this persecution that has been promised!
- Remember the incredible persecution that Christ went through for you. Remember also that our ultimate hope is in heaven and that nothing we could possibly endure here in this life will compare to the incredible glory of seeing God face to face! (Romans 8:18)
- Ask yourself the honest question, "Have I undergone any persecution for my faith in Christ?" If the answer is "no", then the next logical question would be, "Am I living a Godly life?" No one will persecute you if they can't tell that you belong to Christ. Now, you won't likely receive electric shocks or be thrown in prison. The religious freedoms we have in America are a great blessing. There certainly are, however, some other costs of being a Christ-follower today. (Maybe it's as simple as catching some grief for being the only voice that lovingly stands up for creation in your science class!)
How do Gods' Scripture story and my story connect with my friend's story?
- Start by praying for the thousands of Christian brothers and sisters all over the world who are being persecuted while you are reading this devotional...many are dying daily because of their faith.
- Do what Jesus told us to do in Matthew 5:44 when He says, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." If you undergo persecution of any kind, praise God for the opportunity to suffer on His behalf...and then pray for the very ones who are persecuting you! (Maybe, like Paul, who persecuted the church before he became a Christ-follower, God will bring them to a life-changing relationship with Christ because of your love and prayers for them.)

Whoever Smelt It Dealt It!
Jose A. Cruz, of West Virginia, raised a stink (literally!) when he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol last Tuesday. When taken to the local police station for a breathalyzer test, Cruz (who claimed to have an upset stomach) allegedly scooted his chair close to the officers, lifted his leg, and "let on rip!" According to one police officer, the stench "created contact of an insulting or provoking nature." Because of his offensive release, Cruz was charged with battery on a police officer, among other charges.

2 Corinthians 2:14-17

Paul lived in the day of the Roman Empire. When the Roman army would return from another battle victory, the Roman general would show off their prisoners and loot in a parade of triumph. The streets would be lined with people burning incense to honor their false gods. This aroma was sweet for the victors, but it was a foul stench for the captives because they faced slavery and death.
When we (followers of Christ) talk about God's Story and our story, it smells great to some and to others - it stinks!
Other believers will like the fragrance of Christ in us, unless they're not living to please Jesus at the time.
For those who are not followers of Christ, it may smell like death at first, because deep in their souls, the Holy Spirit will convict them of their eternal destination without the forgiveness of Christ. But this is good - it's part of God's Story - His Spirit is pointing out their need for spiritual rescue and will attract them to the sweet smell of life in Christ!
But do we smell like new life in Jesus Christ? Jesus will use our lives to be like a sweet aroma to others if we are full of His grace and love. Be honest. How do you smell?
How can you connect today's God's Story to your life?
- Remember today's story - how offensive and foul Cruz' gas was to the officers around him. Be honest. Has your life been wafting a horrible stench in the lives of those around you? If your life in Christ is stale and and you suddenly try to be a "witness" for Christ, you may be releasing an unpleasant aroma that is clouding your friends' view of Christ. Don't drop a religious "bomb" on others!
- Talk to God right now. Praise Him for the sweet aroma of Christ's forgiveness which keeps you from the stench of eternal death! Confess any way in which you have been smelling more like the decay of this world rather than new life in Jesus Christ. Ask God's Spirit to keep pointing out anything unclean in your life so that you will give off the fragrance of Christ to others. Thank Jesus for keeping you spiritually fresh every day!
- Memorize 2nd Corinthians 2:15 as a daily reminder of the need to smell good!
- Whenever you put on perfume, cologne, or some body spray, pray that God's Spirit will empower you to give off the aroma of Christ to others. Or the next time you "let one rip," take a moment and ask yourself what kind of spiritual aroma you are spreading.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story and your story to the lives of others?
- The next time you're with your friends or family and someone, inevitably, passes gas, take that opportunity to bring up this story and today's scripture passage - Ask them what kind of an aroma they think Christians are spreading. This should allow for some interesting discussion and may help give you an opportunity to share how God's Story is affecting your story.

Undoubtedly the hanging stunt was a physical and mental test.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us?
Jesus faced an incredible ordeal of his own. Much harder than hanging upside down for 60 hours. We read in Matthew 4 that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. Jesus didn't get to take breaks, or sign autographs. Jesus had to face the Devil as he threw temptations at him. The Devil even used God's own words to try to persuade Jesus to jump from the Temple in verse 6, saying the angels would protect him. But Jesus stood firm against the temptation and refused to put his Father to the test.
Check out these Study Notes from the Life Application Study Bible for Matthew 4:5-7 ... God is not our magician in the sky ready to perform on request. In response to Satan's temptations, Jesus said not to put God to a test (Deuteronomy 6:16). You may want to ask God to do something to prove his existence or his love for you ... God wants us to live by faith, not by magic. Don't try to manipulate God by asking for signs.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
Today's story reminds us that when temptation comes our way, we can allow God to be our strength. We can lean on His Word to overcome the Devil and the temptations he may throw at us. That means we need to commit His Word to our hearts. We are also reminded, that we shouldn't test God by putting ourelves into situations where we would be tempted.
So what should you do? ...
- Read God's Word and commit it to memory.
- Don't test God by allowing yourself to be in places or situations where you will be tempted.
- When temptaions do come, stand firm on God's Word.
- Ask someone you trust to help you avoid temptation by holding you accountable.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story, and our story to others?
- When you hear someone talk about David Blaine and his "amazing stunts," look for a way to talk about God's "Amazing Grace."
- When your friends struggle with temptation of any kind, point them to God's Word as their weapon.
- Pray for your friends who are looking for a sign from God, who might be putting God to the test.
- Pray for opporunities to talk with a friend about today's dailybide!

Energy drinks can cause caffeine intoxication

Energy drinks have been popular for years, and the market keeps expanding. Some people drink them like they would soda -- during breakfast, lunch, dinner and as snacks. But there is such a thing as too much energy. A study published today in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence delivers a stern warning about the possibility of caffeine intoxication from energy drinks.
"The caffeine content of energy drinks varies over a 10-fold range, with some containing the equivalent of 14 cans of Coca-Cola, yet the caffeine amounts are unlabeled and few include warnings about potential health risks of caffeine intoxication," said one of the study's authors, Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Caffeine intoxication is a recognized clinical syndrome. It is described as nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, rapid heartbeat, restlessness and pacing. What does today's God's Story scripture teach us?
In both passages, Jesus speaks of the eternal life He provides.
In Matthew 4, Jesus had just finished a 40 day fast from food, and he was very hungry. Satan was trying to tempt Him into performing a miracle against the Father's will. He wanted Jesus to prove His Son of God status by turning a few stones into bread. Jesus, abiding with the Father, responded in power by quoting Deuteronomy. The verse in Matthew 4:4 reminds us that our very life is to come from the Word of God. Food is important for survival, but the abiding in Jesus is infinitely more important.
In John 6, Jesus reminds us that He has the ability to provide "food" that will never end. Earthly food will provide temporary energy and then be gone. The life that we receive from the spirit of God has no end.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
What are you relying on for your daily life? Do you find that you can't survive a single morning without a cup of coffee? Are you skipping meals and substituting energy drinks?
Ask yourself: what or who am I dependent on? Do you receive your daily energy from an abiding relationship with Jesus, or a stocked refrigerator full of JOLT?
How can we connect today's story, God's Story, and our story to others?
When you see a friend drinking an energy drink, be reminded to PRAY for their salvation in Jesus.
ASK yourself, does this friend know about the eternal energy and life that a relationship with Jesus brings?
SHARE with your friend one of the verses from today's scripture. Remind them that eternal food will pass away, but life with Jesus Christ brings eternal life.

Chocolate Helps Heart Stay Healthy
A small square of chocolate daily protects the heart from inflammation and subsequent heart disease, a new study of Italians suggests. Milk chocolate might not do the job.
However, this guilty pleasure has a limit. Specifically, only 6.7 grams of chocolate per day (or 0.23 ounces) represents the ideal amount. For comparison, one Hershey's dark chocolate bar is about 41 grams (so a recommendation might be one of those a week).

"Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4, NIV).
Think about this verse!
If you take delight in the LORD:
- "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, NIV).
- "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33, NIV).
- "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30, NIV).
He will give you the desires of your heart.
- "in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:6, NIV).
- "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine..." (Ephesians 3:20, NIV).
- "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10, NIV).
Maybe the headlines I'd like to see are too much about me and too little about what God wants for me. How about you? I like the chocolate one a lot! I'd like to add:
- Driving a Corvette eliminates speeding tickets.
- Watching "The Office" has some redeeming value.
- Jelly Beans reduce cavities.
God is fine with Corvettes, TV and Jelly Beans, but he really cares about the real you deep down inside. He cares about your choices, who you are becoming because of them, and the difference you can make - if you find your delight in Him.
Now make a list that reflects delighting in God.
- Daily quiet time in God's Word connects you to God.
- "Never miss a Sunday at church" movement gaining popularity among teenagers and college students.
- What would Jesus do?
Somehow when we start putting God first, our faith makes sense, and our relationship with Jesus makes sense. We sense his peace, his joy, and his purpose. We have the true desires of our heart!
Perhaps the coolest result of getting our priorities straight is we begin to realize how blessed we really are, and how much we really want our friends to have the same experience. The Golden Rule should probably be changed to Platinum, because is can't be put any stronger:
"do to others what you would have them do to you" (Matt. 7:12, NIV).

The Secret to Long Life

TOKYO (Reuters) - The world's oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday on Thursday, telling reporters at his home in southern Japan about his joyful life and healthy appetite.
"I'm happy," said Tomoji Tanabe as the local mayor presented him with flowers and a giant tea cup glazed with his name and date of birth. "I'm well. I eat a lot," he added.
Tanabe, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living male last year, eats mostly vegetables and believes the key to longevity is not drinking alcohol.
The former civil servant lives with his son, drinks milk every day and has no major illnesses, although he now writes in his diary only once or twice a month. He used to write on a daily basis.
"He's said he wants to live for another 10 years, that he doesn't want to die." The Japanese are among the world's longest-lived people, with the number of those aged 100 or older at a record 36,276, a government report last week showed.

How does God's Story scripture tell us about the secret to long life?
Tomoji Tanabe deserves our utmost respect partly because the Bible instructs us to respect our elders...but also because the man has lived in 3 different centuries for cryin out loud! That seems like a really long time. Just imagine all of the change in the world he has seen.
But the truth is...113 years is just a blink of an eye when compared to eternity. In today's passage, Peter is reminding us that this life is short and that we better not get too wrapped up in the things of this world because just like the flowers of the field...it will all be gone tomorrow.
He also is teaching us that there is only one thing that will last and that is God's Word...and this word is the Good News...life eternal through Jesus Christ.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
Take an honest look at your life. Is your focus more on eternal matters or is it on sports, fashion, music, drama, a boyfriend or girlfriend, impressing the right people or even video games? C'mon...be honest. Take a minute and be real about answering that question.
2 Corinthians 4:18 tells us to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
If your focus right now is on anything else but the eternal, talk to God and ask Him to help you refocus. When we do this, it makes the daily "struggles" seem pretty insignificant. It helps us to understand how really small we are. It also helps us to live with purpose...that is, spending our time and energy on eternal matters...things that will last.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- Knowing that time is short, be intentional about building relationships where you can share the Good News. No one is guaranteed 113 years...or even tomorrow.
- Think of those friends who seem to be doing pretty well according to the world's standards. They may have plenty of money, good looks, awards and the right friends...but eternally, where are they? Many of these friends of ours are spiritually empty and long for something more. We can introduce them to Jesus who has true life to offer them and its life eternal!

The House that Ruth Built
In New York, fans dropped thousands of dollars to attend one last game at Yankee Stadium. Some tickets with a face value ranging between $95-$280 sold for over $3,000 each - and people paid it . . . just to get one final memory in Yankee Stadium. The stadium, which was built in 1923, has become more than just a landmark to baseball fans around the world, but has failed to meet historical landmark status, according to the National Register of Historical Places and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Therefore, the building that has housed so many baseball greats (including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle) has seen its last crowd and hosted its final game against the Baltimore Orioles Saturday night. Before long, the building will be nothing but a memory for baseball fans and will be replaced with a $1.6 billion stadium nearby, in the Bronx.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about our hearts?
So many of the baseball fans who have been to a game at Yankee Stadium, spent time in the stands, countless dollars on the tickets, and hours cheering for their favorite athletes are brokenhearted over the loss of such a beloved building. It has become a part of who they are. Nevertheless, regardless of their investments, this 85 year old "House that Ruth Built" is run down and about to be destroyed.
Now, there is nothing wrong with spending money on sports tickets, or anything else that may have special meaning to you. Only you know your heart and the motivation behind where you spend your money; however, this story is a great reminder that things of this world are. . . well, simply that . . . of this world! Which means they are only temporary.
Eventually, everything comes to ruin, whether by moths, rust, thieves, or simply the passing of time. God wants us to understand that the things that we choose to invest a significant amount of our time, energy, or money into are the things that we will hold dear to our hearts. And if we are not careful and do not invest wisely, we will be left with empty hearts and nothing but a small pile of dust.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Pray and thank God for all that He has blessed you with and given you an opportunity to be a part of. Then, ask God to search your heart and point out any areas that you may be investing too much time, energy, or money into that may be stealing your heart from Him.
- If someone were to look at your life and where you spend your time and money, would they see God? Where might they say your heart is?
- Find a trusted friend or parent to help keep you accountable by checking in with you regularly about where you're laying your "treasures" and where your heart is most invested. Give them permission to call you out on it when things get out of whack.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?
- Talk to your friends about what's happening with Yankee Stadium and use the story to lead into a conversation about what God says about our treasures and our hearts.
- Share with a friend how you've seen this play out in your life - do you have a time when you've invested a lot of time and energy into something only to find yourself and your heart lost in it all? Talk to them about the differences between putting your faith and love into "The House Ruth Built" and the Kingdom that God is building.

Remnants of Hurricane Ike Cause Millions Lose Power!

The remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through the midwest last Sunday, as powerful winds cut power to more than 3,000,000 people from Missouri to Pennsylvania. I, the author of today's Daily Bide, was one of those millions. I realize that we rarely take a personal path, but in light of this week in the Midwest - Today's Story is really My Story.
Matthew 6:31-34 (NLT)
31 So don't worry about having enough food or drink or clothing. 32 Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, 33 and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.
34 So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about worry?
Sunday, when the storm hit the midwest, we only expected 30-40mph winds. Instead we saw the devasting power of windgusts of 75-90mph over a 5 hour period. For several days we were without power, telephone, even cell phones. Schools, stores, restaurants, and gas stations were closed. No one was prepared for a week like this! Many began to worry about tomorrow.
Today's scripture reminds us, however, that we don't need to worry about anything. Our heavenly Father knows all that we really need. Take comfort in that promise today.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Ask God to point out the things that tend to worry you.
- Thank God for the blessings in your life that you might be taking for granted.
- Thank God for the day-to-day communication you have with your friends and family.
- "Make the Kingdom of God your primary concern." (Matt. 6:33)

- Take some time to pray (again) for the victims of Hurricane Ike - from Texas to New York!!
- If you live in the midwest - invite someone without power to come to dinner, or offer them a hot meal or a shower.
- When your friends talk about worrying about the future, share today's scripture with them have a conversation about God's Story.

The Lost Coins
MIMS, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Highway Patrol has closed part of Interstate 95 after a truck carrying $187,000 worth of nickels crashed and scattered coins across the road, killing one person.
The highway patrol says the tractor-trailer was carrying the nickels from Philadelphia to Miami when it apparently rear-ended another truck early Wednesday. Authorities say a passenger in the truck with the coins was killed and both drivers were hospitalized.
Authorities say so many nickels spilled out that the highway is sparkling in the Florida sun.
Florida Trooper Kim Miller says the nickels also were littering the grass — and that shovels might be needed to pick them up. Secret Service and Treasury agents went to the area to make sure no one tries to grab the coins.

- God is pursuing us like the woman pursues her lost coins
- God is relentless in His pursuit
- It's our sin that gets in the way -- we resist God
- God rejoices when we respond to His love -- the lost coin becomes found!
- Do your friends really know that God loves them? Do they believe it?
- Do your friends realize that God is longing for them?
- Do your friends understand that God rejoices when they turn to Him?
Consider sharing a piece of God's story today with your friend. Share with them the story about the lost coins. Maybe you'll have a chance to introduce them to this loving Father who is pursuing us all.

When Going Green isn't Pretty!

The sight of green polar bears has prompted many questions from visitors concerned about whether the animals are sick or carrying mold, zoo official Masami Kurobe said Sunday.
“Visitors seem to be shocked by the color, and we are asked every day why they are so green,” he said.
High temperatures in July and August and less-frequent water changes because of the zoo’s conservation efforts caused an algae growth in the bear pond and safety moat, Kurobe said.
Algae that enters hollow spaces in the bears’ fur is hard to rinse off, he said.
The bears are expected to return to their natural color when the algae growth subsides in November, Kurobe said.

This verse summarizes a truth we have all seen play out in real life. Where you go, who you go there with and what you do when you get there all greatly affect who you become.
Romans 12:2 in the Amplified Bible really does "amplify" this truth loud and clear. It says, "Don't let the world squeeze you into its mold." You don't really fit in with the crowd at that party, or really desire to do what they are doing, but you find yourself there anyway . You are shaped by a Christ-centered mold, but find yourself being re-shaped by different values and behavior. It's very uncomfortable. It will also "ruin" you if you don't do something different.
If you wade around in the algae, you are going to turn green.
So you may be asking yourself the question found in Psalm 119:9-11.
9 "How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word."
10 "I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from you commands."
11 "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
To stay "pure" in a world full of "bad company" you'll need to stop excusing bad behavior and daily make good decisions. These verses suggest:
- Obey God's Word. It's one thing to listen to it, but we need to "live according to it."
- Seek God. If we truly desire to abide in Christ, we will build a strong relationship with him, and will not want to disappoint him by what we "do or say" (Colossians 3:17).
- Don't stray from his commands. Too often we try to live according to God's word, and live according the world at the same time.
If "bad company ruins good morals," do you think its possible that good company could repair bad morals? I think so! The problem is when you go into bad company territory and think your little bit of "good" will rub off on everyone there. Instead, you walk away looking a little more green every time.
But what if you commit to building strong positive relationships with students who share your values? This probably means being committed and fully engaged in your youth group, or a Christian-sponsored club at your school. Your group will only be as fun, as welcoming and as effective as you are!
Then when a friend who is not a Christ follower visits, they will experience something real, and life-changing. Instead of you turning green, you just might see some of your green friends turn white!

Critically Endangered
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A tiny frog species thought by many experts to be extinct has been rediscovered alive and well in a remote area of Australia's tropical north, researchers said Thursday.
The Armoured Mistfrog had not been seen since 1991 until it was found recently in Australia's tropical north.
"A lot of us were starting to believe it had gone extinct, so to discover it now is amazing," Hoskin said. "It means some of the other species that are missing could potentially just be hidden away along some of the streams up there."
Armoured Mistfrogs had been classified as critically endangered rather than extinct, but most researchers believed they had died out, Alford said.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about never giving up on anyone?
Paul wasn't kidding when he said that he was "the worst of sinners". Before he became a Christ-follower, he used to hunt down Christians and either throw them in jail or kill them. This was one bad dude...but not only did God not give up on him; He decided to use him in huge ways!
In today's passage, God uses Paul's testimony to teach us that...
- No one is outside of God's grace.
- Saving the worst of sinners is exactly why Jesus came to the earth.
- God has perfect patience in waiting for lost people to come to know Him
How can we connect God's Story scripture to our lives?
- We need to remember that no matter what sins we have committed, God can and will forgive us if we only ask Him.
- We need to remember that the same is true for others...regardless of how "bad" they are or how "far away" they appear to be from God.
- Keep in mind that Paul was the "worst of sinners" but after he submitted his life to Christ, he was used by God to do incredible things for the Kingdom!
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
The Armoured Mistfrog was considered lost for good...and now it has new life. Paul was working against the church at first and God changed him into someone who would reach thousands for Christ. You were once full of sin and now are completely forgiven.
Is it possible that God can do this again in someone else's life?...even someone who is really far away from God?
- Think of a family member, coworker or friend who is "critically endangered" spiritually...the one that no one would think would ever become a Christian...and commit to praying for them...and just watch what God will do. Maybe they will be the next "Paul" who will reach thousands!
- Commit to memory I Timothy 1:15-17 and I John 1:9 (or at least where they are in the Bible) so if someone ever tells you that they feel like God could never forgive them for all the junk they have done...you'll know where to point them.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about loving and serving others?
If you watched the video above, you witnessed a beautiful example of people helping people. I think the thing that hit me most was that those who showed up to volunteer and help were victims themselves! They showed up to serve and to show their support to their brothers, sisters, and neighbors. They did it out of a mutual love and respect for their city.
In today's scripture passage, Jesus is speaking to the Gentiles about how, when Jesus returns, God will judge His people and their love for Him by the way they have shown love to others, specifically, His "brothers" (the Jewish people). He explains that it is the way we speak to others, provide for, care for, and love them that communicates our faith and love for Christ.
Although Christ made it clear that He'd come to provide salvation for all people, the Jewish clung to the idea that salvation would only be for the Chosen people, so clearly Gentiles and Jews did not see eye to eye. But in this passage, regardless of the obvious division between people groups, Jesus is calling His people to love and serve each other in times of need.
If a group of Houstonians can put aside their own needs and differences to serve each other because of a mutual love for their city, how much more can (and should) we, as children of God, do for those around us who are in need, because of our mutual love for and faith in Jesus Christ?
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for sending His Son, Jesus, offering the gift of salvation to all people - Jews and Gentiles alike. Remember that it is only by His grace that we have been adopted into the Family of God.
- How often do you notice the needs of others around you? Are you too wrapped up in your own desires, needs, or self pity to notice the true needs of others? Pray and ask God to give you eyes to see those He's put in your life who may need something today.
- Do you struggle to serve and help those you don't particularly get along with? Pray for God's perspective towards people - that you would see them as His children, serving them as though you were serving Christ.
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Look for ways you can help victims of Hurricane Ike - be creative! If you live too far to physically help with clean-up, find ways to raise money, send encouragement, gather for prayer, etc.
- Think about those who are around you (neighbors, church family, teachers, fellow students) . . . Is there a specific need that you know about that you (and maybe a few friends) might be able to help meet? Does someone need their grass cut? House painted? Could they use some food or clothing? Could you offer free babysitting to parents who need a night out? Use what God's given you (gifts, abilities, material possessions, etc) to serve and bless someone else today.

To Your Name Give Glory

The Tower of Babel was not built for the glory of God, but instead was designed for the glory of man. The builders wanted to make a name for themselves (11:4). This is the opposite of "calling on the name of the Lord" (Genesis 4:26). God saw that their efforts were to try and leave Him out, and He stepped in to show them who's God. God deserves all of the glory and credit.
Consider these questions:
- Look at your to-do list today - are your actions for God's glory or your own?
- In what area of life are you trying to "one-up" God?
- Have you ever tried to prove God wrong? When?
God desires our whole and complete heart. He desires to be the object of our affection and the reason for our being.
We can't take credit for God's creativity. We'll never be as wise as Him. "For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men" (1 Cor 1:25). He is infinitely wiser than us and deserves all of the glory.
This particle machine is an attempt to prove the creation of our universe through the "big bang theory." The tower builders were also attempting to "one-up" God by building a structure that could reach the Heavens. Instead of seeking God for the answers to their questions, they were trying to find the answers in their own strength and wisdom. They wanted the credit!
As a follower of Christ, intentionally give credit to God for everything in your life. As you live alongside others who are not yet followers of Christ, help them to see your motivation for life and work. Recognize others who might be trying to live in their own strength without the help of God. Pray for them, that Jesus Christ would reveal Himself to them through you.
Then, In all that you do, work skillfully, and give God the glory. Invite others into this conversation. Explain that your life is not your own, but is actually Jesus living through you.

Ephesians 1:9-12

Kentucky Fried Chicken's SECRET recipe is one of the best kept secrets of all time. Know what, though? It still tastes like chicken! (And in my opinion an awful lot like Popeye's recipe!) If a chicken batter recipe is such a big deal, how much bigger of a deal is the secret of God's Story?
The amazing thing, is that the secret of God's Story isn't a secret! The truth about God has been "revealed to us." God's plan is "centered on Christ." As you get to know Jesus, and do your best to follow him, you discover more and more about who God is.
Verse eleven in The Message says, "Its in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us,..."
The secret is out! God loves you just as you are, and he's looking for you, and wants a relationship with you. He demonstrated that love by sending Jesus to pay the penalty of your sin! (Romans 5:8).
Verse 12 gives us the natural response to discovering God's secret plan and beginning a relationship with Him:
"God's purpose was that we who were the first to trust in Christ should praise our glorious God."
How about you? Do you get bogged down in the negative pressures all around you or do you take time to thank God for loving you, forgiving your sins, and for at least ten other things everyday? Try it right now!
Seriously, if you didn't come up with ten things to praise God for go back to the previous paragraph.
A second natural response to discovering God's secret is the desire to share it with others. It IS the best kept secret. As you follow Jesus, you will see changes in your life, and so will your friends. They will ask you what is happening in your life. So you naturally want to tell them about Christ.
1 Peter 3:15-16 gives us some very wise advice:
"...if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. But you must do this in a gentle and respectful way...
God's plan is a secret you can share!
- Make Christ the center of your life.
- Let friends know you are committed to follow Jesus.
- Answer their questions with gentleness and respect.
- Watch them begin to realize God loves them too!
- Eat a Big Mac. Save a chicken!

The cheers of millions...turned to jeers in an instant.
Olympic gold medalist and World Champion...stripped of all of her medals.
American hero...now a national outcast.
Marion Jones left prison after a 6-month sentence for two counts of perjury and her involvement in an illegal drug fraud case. This came after a judgment that was ordered in a federal court in New York earlier this year. What she now faces is the further judgment that awaits her outside of the prison walls.
John 8:1-11
8:1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. What does God's Story scripture teach us about grace?
Here we find Jesus in what appears to be quite a predicament. The religious leaders, who made a habit of trying to trap Jesus in situations just like this, are asking him yet another question that appears to have no good answer.
If He gives the go ahead to kill this adulterous woman, He not only breaks the Roman law at the time forbidding the Jews to carry out a death sentence, He also comes off as judging and unforgiving. If Jesus allows her to go free, He would be contradicting the Jewish law, which clearly called for her death.
So, in a reply that only the Master Teacher could give, He combines truth and grace in a way that no one could see coming. He upholds the law by allowing the execution to begin...but He adds one condition...that only those who were without sin could take part in it. One by one, the stones fall from the hands of the angry men as they realize that they too were sinners. As they remember their own failures, their previous judgment is transformed into grace.
After a few moments, the only One with whom this adulterous woman is left...is the only One who actually meets the qualifications to throw stones at her. He is perfect. She is not. They both know it.
His response, however, is not to bring forth the judgment that she deserved. After realizing that all of her other accusers have not condemned her, His response is simple..."Then neither do I..."
From condemnation...to forgiveness.
From shame...to new life.
From disgrace...to grace.
How can we connect God's Story scripture to our lives?
In my relationship with God I need to know first and foremost that there is no sin that can't be forgiven. All of us have messed up. We all have things that we are ashamed of...and if the whole world knew our mistakes like they do with Marion Jones...they might consider us a disgrace. But we have to remember that God doesn't view us like others might. When we ask for His forgiveness (I John 1:9), He promises to forgive us and offer us the grace we need.
In my relationships with others I need to respond with the same grace and forgiveness that has been offered to me. (Matthew 6:14,15) Just as those men reflected on their own mistakes of the past and put down their stones...so I need to put down my judgment.
If Jesus doesn't condemn them...then "neither do I".
How can we connect God's Story scripture to the lives of others?
- If you want your friends to open up and trust you with the junk in their lives, take the step of faith to be transparent with them. As you feel it is appropriate, be willing to share some of the messy parts of your life and how God has forgiven you and offered you grace.
- If they do, in time, share some of the hard parts of life, explain to them how they too can experience the amazing forgiveness of Christ and the peace that comes with it!
- Ask God to show you if there is anyone you are withholding grace from...someone who has hurt you...and then ask Him to help you forgive and extend the grace you have been given by God.

What does God's Story scripture teach us about how we should be living?
For generations teenagers have felt looked down upon and misunderstood by parents, teachers, and others in the adult community. I've talked to countless teenagers who feel as though people won't listen to them, or give them a chance because their age. As a result, more and more teens are violently lashing out toward those who might oppose them. No longer is respect just given to elders and those in positions of authority, teens believe that their respect must be earned. But this is not the way God wants His children to act.
God reminds us in Paul's letter to Timothy that when others question you or look down on you because you are young, instead of lashing out or getting discouraged, you should set the example. God wants us to be an example of Christ, especially in those moments, in the way you talk, in the way you act, in the way you love, and in the way you live out your faith.
Remember, God has chosen to do some incredible things through teenagers all throughout history! Don't miss what He wants to do through you!
How can we connect God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Take a moment right now to pray and ask God to search your heart. Are there things you need to confess about the way you've been acting toward others? Have you been setting an example for others in your speech, conduct, love, faith and purity? Confess it and ask for God's forgiveness.
- Ask God to help you be a better example - to show grace to those who look down on you and treat you poorly. Go to those whom you may have disrespected recently and sincerely apologize - ask for their forgiveness.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?
- The next time you feel disrespected or treated unfairly, take a deep breath . . . (don't forget to exhale!) . . . and find a way to respond in love. Walk away if need be, but set the example for what is Godly and what is right.
- Go out of your way to do something for someone whom you know has a preconceived idea about young people - maybe their only interaction with teenagers has been with people like the boy in the story above. Show him/her that teens can be kind, generous, and loving. Take the time to show Christ through your words and actions toward such people.
- Encourage your friends to do the same! Tell them about the story of the guy in Australia and talk about the consequences of his actions. The next time you see each other about to go off at a parent or teacher (or anybody!), pull the other aside and remind him/her that it's not worth it. Positive peer pressure can be extremely effective!

LOS ANGELES - The omnipresent baritone and gravely bass undertones of Don LaFontaine's distinctive voice had the unique ability to seamlessly embellish big-screen kisses, slice through over-the-top explosions, perfectly pair with robust musical scores, glide alongside car chases and effortlessly co-star with any A-list talent in Hollywood.
"He was the originator of the modern voiceover for movie trailers," said voiceover artist Jim Tasker. "He is the standard for which all other voiceovers for movie trailers are measured. For the past 30 years, his voice has been the gauge for all of us in the industry."
LaFontaine, who died Monday at the age of 68 from complications in the treatment of an ongoing illness, was the world's most recognizable announcer, thanks to his deft diction and a popular 2006 commercial in which he melodramatically retells a customer's mundane account of dealing with her car insurance company - all while standing inside her kitchen.
"The truth is there's only about 15 to 20 guys in the country who can do this," said voiceover artist Tom Kane. "They'll do their best to fill his shoes. It's funny. You can hear it in their voices. To one degree or another, they're all doing their best Don LaFontaine impersonation."
