Peace On Earth?
Does this look like "peace on earth" to you?
photos courtesy images.google.com
Luke 2:10-14
10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (ESV)
After reading today's God's Story scripture, what do you think the angels meant when they told the shepherds that they were bringing "Good News" and that "Peace on Earth" had arrived?
It's pretty obvious that if the angels meant that the Christ child was bringing peace between earthly nations, God failed.
Sadly, millions of people exchange Christmas cards with the words, "Peace on Earth" on them, but have little or no idea of what this means.
The only time there will be peace on earth is during a future time after Christ's second coming. Until then, sinful people will continue to be selfish and hate each other. Until then, sinful nations will continue to be selfish and fight each other. Until then, there will be no peace on earth and the world will continue to see and experience bad news.
At the time of Christ's birth, most Jews were waiting for a Savior to deliver them from Roman rule, or from physical ailments. But Jesus, the Messiah, came to deliver them from sin. Christ came to set up a Kingdom and He heals sickness, but His "peace" is so much more than most people understand.
Christ came to pay the price for our sin and provide peace with God. He brings more than political or physical change - He brings change to our lives both now and forever.
This "peace" is a gift that God. It is the only "good news" that lasts.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
Thank God for the peace He offers through His Son's death and resurrection. If you know Christ as Savior, praise Him for the privilege of receiving His gift both now and forever! Pray that 2008 will be a time when people of every nation on the face of the earth will come to recognize that "peace" is needed and available only through Jesus Christ.
During these holidays, pray for someone in your storysphere who needs peace with God.
Pray for the soldiers who could not be home for the holidays because they are fighting terrorists somewhere. Pray for their families to experience God's peace. Pray for the soldiers who don't know Christ as Savior to receive "peace" with God through Jesus.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
Remember that one way you can demonstrate "peace with God" in your life is to love and forgive those around you with whom you have not had a peaceful relationship...parents...siblings...others at school...others at work...

Wise people keep seeking Him
If you could back in time and talk to the Christmas Wise Men, what would you say to them or ask them? Why?

Matthew 2
The Visit of the Wise Men
2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
The Flight to Egypt
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Herod Kills the Children
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”
The Return to Nazareth
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: “He shall be called a Nazarene.” (ESV)
After reading today's God's Story scripture, think about how would you apply these truths and answer these questions:
The wise men were focused on seeking the Savior.
WHAT DIFFERENCE WOULD IT MAKE IN YOUR OWN LIFE IF YOU DID WHATEVER IT TAKES TO EXPERIENCE INTIMACY WITH JESUS CHRIST?
The wise men were focused on worshipping Christ.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORSHIPPING CHRIST FOR WHO HE IS RATHER THAN WHAT HE CAN DO FOR US? WHICH DO YOU USUALLY DO?
The wise men were focused on following Christ.
HOW WOULD IT AFFECT THE DIRECTION OF YOUR LIFE IF YOU LOOKED TO JESUS CONSISTENTLY?
The wise men were focused on trusting God, even when circumstances were very difficult.
WHEN YOUR WORLD SEEMS OUT OF CONTROL, ARE YOU ABLE TO LIVE UNDER GOD'S CONTROL? WHY OR WHY NOT?
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for the practical lessons in His Word from the story of the three kings. Confess any way in which you have not been living as a "wise" follower of Christ. Thank God for desiring intimacy with you. Ask His Spirit to teach you to truly worship Him for who He is. Ask Him to show you the direction you need in life, both for tomorrow and for the rest of your life. Offer yourself as a gift to Him this Christmas season and in the new year.
- Pray every day for the faith you need to recognize God's wisdom at work in your life and for the courage to live it.
- Whenever you realize that you have learned more of God's wisdom, write it down in your journal and thank Him for it.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Rent and watch the movie, 'THE NATIVITY STORY' with someone you are trying to reach for Christ. Use the three wise men part to talk about what you have learned in today's DAILYBIDE.
- When someone in your storysphere comments on their need for wisdom, ask questions, listen, and offer to pray for them to experience wisdom from God.

Did the shepherds exchange presents?
Do these shepherds look excited about telling others the incredible Good News of Christ?
Does the Good News of Christ's birth (part of God's Story) affect your life all year, or is it just part of a character you play at Christmas time?

Luke 2:8-20
The Shepherds and the Angels
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. (ESV)
After reading today's God's Story scripture, how would you answer the following questions?
1) What do verses 15-16 tell you about the hearts of the shepherds? How did they give themselves to Christ, even though He was just a baby?
2) In verse 17, what did the shepherds do with this incredible supernatural experience? What motivated them to give away their faith?
3) In verse 20, you'll find that the story continues for the shepherds. What does the fact that they gave glory to God tell you about their faith?
4) How could the example of the shepherds help you experience Christmas year-round?
...the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds' story were astonished...The shepherds went back to their fields and flocks, glorifying and praising God for what the angels had told them, and because they had seen the child...
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Praise God for sending His Son, your Saviour! Confess any way in which you have been keeping your faith in Christ to yourself. Ask God to show you the parts of your life that need to be turned over to His control. Ask Him to show you opportunities during the holidays for spreading the good news, just like the shepherds did. Spend a few minutes in quiet worship, just giving thanks and glory to God for what He has done in your life.
- During these holidays, ask God every day to give you a shepherd's heart of faith.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- As you see friends, family and even strangers during these holidays, silently pray that they will experience the presence of Christ.
- In the next week, share the "good news" (God's Story) of how Christ has changed your life (your story) with someone God has given you the opportunity to learn their story. It might be someone from school or a family member or neighbor or someone with whom you work.

The day after Christmas

Luke 1:26-35
Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.
Matthew 1:18-20
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Luke 2:4-7
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (ESV)
After reading today's God's Story scripture, how would you answer these questions:
WHY DO YOU THINK GOD USES ORDINARY PEOPLE TO ACCOMPLISH EXTRAORDINARY THINGS IN LIFE?
Mary was a teenager destined to be a simple homemaker. Joseph was a young man from the same "hicks-ville" town and was a simple carpenter. God is not simple - but supernatural! He had big plans for them!
You and I are ordinary people, but God wants us to do the simple things like praying, giving, and encouraging others. God is glorified when we serve Him in obedience.
WHY DO YOU THINK GOD WANTS US TO TRUST HIM EVEN WHEN THE FUTURE DOESN'T LOOK GOOD?
Joseph and Mary faced disgrace and humiliation. Mary could have been stoned to death. People though they were crazy.
What are you facing? Illness? Family problems? Big decisions? God is glorified when we trust Him no matter what.
WHY DO YOU THINK GOD OFTEN USES UNCOMFORTABLE CIRCUMSTANCES IN OUR LIVES WHEN HE GIVES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE HIM?
Mary and Joe were ridiculed. Imagine a 70 mile ride (probably on a mule) while about to deliver a baby. How about fleeing to Egypt? How about raising a perfect child?
What is God asking you to do that seems uncomfortable? God is glorified when we rely on His strength rather than staying in our comfort zone.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Ask God to forgive you for the times when you don't have a very servant-like attitude, or the faith to trust Him when the going gets tough. Thank Him for His plan to use you to accomplish His will on Earth, even though it is often very difficult. Ask him to use "Mary and Joseph assignments" in your life as you strive to serve Him.
- Pray regularly for God to give you the desire to serve Him no matter what the circumstances are in your life.
- For one month, in your journal, keep track of the opportunities that God gives you to serve Him and what you learn in the process.
- Using a topical study Bible, look for stories of "ordinary people" who allowed the "extraordinary God" to accomplish big things for His glory.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Look for opportunities (acts of patience and kindness) to demonstrate the obedient faith of Mary and Joseph these holidays to someone you are trying to reach for Christ. Jesus will empower you to learn their story and connect it to your story and God's Story.
- Have some friends over and rent the DVD of 'The Nativity Story'. Use it as a conversation starter to talk about what you learned in this DAILYBIDE.

Good News!
This was not your normal baby!
Here's a baby that is still making news...
The largest baby on recent record was born to a woman in Brazil in January of 2005. The doctors nicknamed the boy "giant baby." The infant weighed 17 pounds, about the average size of a six-month-old. He was delivered by Cesarean section.
The boy's 38-year-old mother is diabetic, a condition which can commonly cause women to give birth to larger babies. The boy is named Ademilton dos Santos.
The boy's father and four siblings were reportedly surprised at the news.
He is the heaviest baby ever born in Brazil, according to Brazilian medical officials.

Isaiah 7:14
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 9:1-7
For to Us a Child Is Born
9:1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2 The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shined.
3 You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
4 For the yoke of his burden,
and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
5 For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
and every garment rolled in blood
will be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (ESV)
MERRY CHRISTMAS! Today is about the Good News!
Do you think that the woman who gave birth to the "giant baby" felt like this was good news?
When I read the story about this baby weighing 17 pounds at birth, my mouth just dropped! But when I showed this story to my dear wife, who has given birth to three babies, she about fell on the floor! Guys, we will never fully appreciate what women go through to bring little babies or really big ones into this world! No wonder this baby, perhaps one of the biggest ever, made international news!
This got me thinking more about God's Christmas baby. We don't know if Jesus was big or little at birth, or if He had much hair, or if He kept Mary and Joseph up at night. But the news of Christ's birth spread quickly when He was born and it is still making news today....constantly!
How can today's God's Story scripture impact us?
The prophet Isaiah put Jesus in the news long before our Savior was born! Isaiah foretold the "good news" about the coming Messiah, the Christmas child. Jesus is still making the news today because He is the "good news" and has lived up to His name(s)!
Think about how each of the following names for Jesus with their (translated definitions) make the "Good News" real in your own life?
"Immanuel" - (God with us)
"Wonderful Counselor" - (infinite wisdom)
"Mighty God" - (champion in battle)
"Everlasting Father" - (perpetual, compassionate provider)
"Prince of Peace" - (His coming peace)
If you know Jesus as your personal Savior, you have a personal relationship with the One Who has been given the "name above all names". Let the truth of the meaning of Christ's names make news in your life on this Christmas day and every day!
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Go back and read the meanings of Christ's names aloud. As you do, ask Jesus to apply this in your own life. Thank God that you can live in Christ's presence, receive His wisdom to guide you and His power to win spiritual battles. Thank Him for His "daddy-like" protection and provisions, plus His promise of eternal peace for you and everyone who belongs to Him.
- Keep these names of Jesus from Isaiah in mind as you pray during these holidays.
- Memorize today's scripture as a reminder of Who Jesus is in your life.
- As you watch or listen to the media, notice the news (both positive and negative) about Jesus. Let it remind you that some day, "at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord"!
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
Ask those in your storysphere if they can guess the size of the biggest baby ever born in Brazil, or maybe in the world? Share what you learned about the meaning behind the "names" of the baby making the biggest news ever. Ask your friend or family member about a need or challenge in his or her life. Encourage him or her with the truth of how the "baby" named Jesus can meet that need not only at Christmas time but all the time.

All of the Christmas Story is true!
Most Americans Believe in Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ
The majority of Americans believe the Biblical story of Jesus Christ being born to the virgin Mary literally, according to a survey released last week.
Three out of four adults (75 percent) said they believe in the gospel narrative of the birth of Jesus Christ, found a nationwide survey conducted by The Barna Group.
Out of the sixty population subgroups in the research, there was only one group where a majority of respondents did not take the virgin birth literally. The exception was atheists and agnostics – among whom only 15 percent said the event happened literally.
Surprisingly, a solid majority of self-described liberals on political and social issues (60 percent) believed in the biblical view of Christ’s birth.
The Christian polling organization surveyed over 1,000 adults on a half dozen biblical stories to find out if they view those stories to be factually accurate or to be narratives that were not factually accurate but rather meant to teach principles.
Most of the respondents indicated that they accepted five of the six stories – the virgin birth story being the most widely accepted.

Matthew 1:18
The Birth of Jesus Christ
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. (ESV)
After reading today's God's Story scripture, why is the virgin birth part of the Christmas story so important to our faith in Jesus?
Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes answer this question in the following way:
Jesus Christ, God's Son, had to be free from the sinful nature passed on to all other human beings by Adam. Because Jesus was born of a woman, he was a human being; but as the Son of God, Jesus was born without any trace of human sin. Jesus is both fully human and fully divine.
Because Jesus lived as a man, we know that he fully understands our experiences and struggles (Hebrews 4:15, 16). Because he is God, he has the power and authority to deliver us from sin (Colossians 2:13-15). We can tell Jesus all our thoughts, feelings, and needs. He has been where we are now, and he has the ability to help.
The Biblical fact that Jesus was born to Mary "before they came together" is essential to our putting together how Jesus was both human and God's Son at the same time.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for the truth that His ways are perfect and important, even in every detail. Thank Him that the Virgin Birth is evidence that Jesus was born completely human and divine! Ask His Spirit to use these truths to help you live in obedience and trust, because Jesus understands and knows what you are going through. Ask Him to give you opportunities to use the subject of the Virgin Birth as a conversation starter to share your story of faith in Christ with others.
- Check out the other scriptures that relate to the Virgin Birth (Hebrews 4:15-16 and Colossians 2:13-15).
- Share the poll results with your pastor and/or youth leader or with your small group.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
Use the results of the survey about beliefs about Jesus as a conversation starter with your friends and family. It's an opportunity for you to use the virgin birth part of the Christmas story to tell more of your story. Let others know what you learned in today's DAILYBIDE. Explain why you can trust Jesus to meet your needs every day.

Here comes Santa Claus and Jesus!
What will be your focus this Christmas? Santa or God "with us"?

Isaiah 7:14
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
John 1:14
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (ESV)
According to today's God's Story scripture, what is the sign that God's message of love for us is all true?
When the prophecy of Christ's birth came true, it means that God became one of us by coming to earth. "Immanuel" means "God with us". Jesus was not part human and part God; He was completely human and completely divine! His message was simple. We can be forgiven and have a relationship with God through Christ and Christ alone. His message can not be mixed with any other religious message or human perspective.
"Here Comes Santa Claus" is a classic example of how our culture has mixed the message of truth and fantasy:
Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Riding down Santa Claus Lane.
He doesn't care if you're a rich or poor boy,
He loves you just the same.
Santa knows that we're God's children,
That makes everything right.
Fill your hearts with Christmas cheer,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
Well, here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Riding down Santa Claus Lane.
He'll come around when the chimes ring out
It's Christmas morn again.
Peace on Earth will come to all
If we just follow the light
Let's give thanks to the Lord above,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
Everyone is God's creation, but only those who have received Christ's salvation are God's children. Let's be a sign of "Immanuel" to our world by living an obedient life to Christ. It will communicate the truth that He came to be "with us" and He's coming back again!
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for being "Immanuel". Take a couple of minutes to think about the reality of His presence in your life and praise Him for it. Ask His Spirit to help you live out the truth of His first coming and His future coming.
- Memorize John 1:14 as a reminder of what Christ's coming to earth really means.
- During the next several days, write down "signs" of Christ's presence in your life and in the lives of others. Use this list as a way to praise Christ!
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Pray every day for your life to be a "sign" of Christ's love to others around you.
- Whenever you hear a song about Santa Claus, take a moment to pray that the real story of Christmas will be received by people around you.
- Use the song, "Here Comes Santa Claus" as a conversation starter with those in your storysphere to share what you learned in today's DAILYBIDE.

Still shopping for that perfect gift?
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- While the origins of the Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas" may be a mystery, one thing is certain: It's getting more costly to buy your true love all the items mentioned.
It would cost $78,100 to buy the 364 items, from a single partridge in a pear tree to the 12 drummers drumming, repeatedly on each day as the song suggests, according to the annual PNC Christmas Price Index compiled by PNC Wealth Management. The cost is up 4 percent from $75,122 last year.
Buying each item in the song just once would cost $19,507, up 3.1 percent from last year's $18,921. And shopping online would be costlier, with the total for the 364 items costing $128,886, up 2.5 percent from last year's $125,767. You would spend $31,249 online for each item just once this year.
Helping push the cost up this year is the minimum wage hike, which bumped the cost of eight maids a-milking from about $41 to nearly $47.
Higher food costs pushed the six geese a-laying from $300 to $360. And reflecting higher gold prices, those five gold rings will cost $395, up 21.5 percent from last year's $325.

2 Corinthians 9:15
15 Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! (ESV)
In today's God's Story scripture, how does Paul describe the perfect Christmas gift?
That's simple. God's Son is a gift that is "inexpressible". In other words- a gift too wonderful for words! If you go study this verse in the original Greek language, Paul's description of God's gift is "indescribable".
I think one reason for the fact that Jesus is too wonderful for us to put into words is that our limited human brains can not understand what the original Christmas gift really cost the Almighty, Holy, Loving God. He gave up His only Son to die for us who deserve nothing less than eternal death, apart from God.
So as we get into the final rush to find just the right gifts for others, take time to worship God for providing you the ultimate priceless gift, at just the right time.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Take a couple of minutes to prayerfully reflect on God's inexpressible gift of Jesus Christ....thank God....ask His Spirit to give you some words to express your grateful heart to our loving Heavenly Father. Ask Jesus to help you keep your focus on Him as you get into the business of the Christmas season.
- Memorize today's verse as a reminder of "the reason for the season".
- Pray every day that Christ will be your focus rather than all the Christmas cliches like the one above.
- Whenever you hear the song "12 Days Of Christmas", remember the cost of God's gift of salvation to you through Jesus Christ.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story scripture and your story to others?
- When you get into conversations with others about how much it costs to buy Christmas gifts, talk about the cost of everything in "the 12 days of Christmas". Follow Jesus' lead on whether this is the right time to share more of your story - how you have received God's perfect gift.
- During the days of Christmas, pray every day for a different friend or family member who needs Jesus. Ask Jesus to show you opportunities during the holidays to learn more of their stories.

I entered The Golden Compass with fairly low expectations. After all, the anti-Compass hype from Christian activists portrayed it as the worst threat to our faith since Nero fed believers to lions in the coliseum.
After surviving what seemed like an eternity but was merely the longest two hours I’ve spent in a theater lately, I realized we as Christians need to stop protesting movies we haven’t seen.
To be frank, the movie is a snore, with apologies to most sleep aids.
The biggest problem? I couldn’t easily grasp what Lyra’s mission was. This, by the way, is crucial to young adult fantasy.
Dorothy wants to get home. Frodo wants to destroy the One Ring. The Pevensie children need to defeat the White Witch. Harry Potter must confront Voldemort—several times.
And Lyra?
Her mission has something to do with an alethiometer—the titular golden compass whose special effects are nowhere near as cool as the filmmakers must think; dust—which is either a metaphor for original sin or something like the spice from Dune ; battling polar bears—who evidently don’t bleed when their jaws are ripped off in a PG movie; and corrupt church officials, who last time I checked most conscientious Christians I know also oppose.
If I set out to design propaganda to lure children away from God, I would at least make it entertaining...
I get the sneaking suspicion the only reason this movie made $26 million its opening weekend was because of the controversy...
This wouldn’t be the first time audiences went to see a movie vehemently opposed by Christian groups. Earlier examples include The Last Temptation of Christ and The DaVinci Code, which out grossed The Passion of the Christ despite universally lackluster critical reviews.
Craig Detweiler, co-director of Fuller Seminary’s Reel Spirituality Institute, believes Christian activists have stirred up controversy surrounding the film for their own gain. He told Fox News, “In this era of the messy marriage of politics and religion, we desperately need more imaginative expressions of faith and doubt.”
Framed within the right context, Compass could actually be helpful. Detweiler explains, “It undoubtedly makes people question, but inspires them to look harder for more authentic religion. Pullman takes license in pointing out the scary, false gods and destructive idols we’ve created. In that sense, I think he’s doing a great service.”
As for me, here’s my recommendation: Don’t avoid Golden Compass because it’s thinly veiled, anti-Christian propaganda. Avoid it because it’s a bad film.
Besides, since Christianity has survived the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Holocaust, to name a few real threats, it will surely survive this—and any other—movie.

Psalm 14:1-2 (NLT)
1 Only fools say in their hearts,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and their actions are evil;
not one of them does good!
2 The Lord looks down from heaven
on the entire human race;
he looks to see if anyone is truly wise,
if anyone seeks God.
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about believing in the one and only true God?
Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”
I think this is pretty clear. What do you think?
Today's story is a movie review on the "The Golden Compass". The main controversy among Christians is whether or not this movie will make kids want to read the trilogy based on the first book of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials". One of the story lines in atheist Pullman's books is how God gets killed.
I have not yet seen the movie, but even the current controversy illustrates how how wise it is to believe in the existence of the one and only true God.
Today's scripture points out that anyone who denies God is either a fool or corrupt - and sometimes both! They are fools because they are denying the proof that God exists. Evil? Yes, because they are not only refusing to live according to God's truths, but leading others away from the truth of God. BUT, God loves "fools" so much, that He wants them to become Christ's followers!
Will we (followers of Christ) do our homework and love the "fools who say there is no God" enough to carry on caring intelligent conversations with them?
Is it possible that sometimes we live as though we deny the one and only true God? We believe, but do we trust God with every part of or lives? We love Jesus, but do we really believe that people without Jesus will be separated from God forever?
As followers of Jesus, we "say there is no God" when we fail to live out the Truth about Him.
- Thank God that He has given all the evidence needed to prove His existence and love for you by coming to earth in the form of a human being - Jesus Christ! Confess any way in which you have been living in denial of His presence. Thank Jesus for His forgiveness and ask Him to help you rely on Him minute by minute.
- During this Christmas season, write down one bit of evidence in your journal every day that you see for God's presence and impact in your daily life.
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- If you don't see "The Golden Compass", become familiar with the background before you talk about it with non-Christians. Consider seeing it with friends who don't know Christ and then use it as a way to learn their beliefs (of lack of) about God. One resource you can check out for more info on the movie is: http://www.cpyu.org/Default.aspx Go to the section on Articles & Research.
- Pray that your peers will come to understand the true message of our loving God this Christmas.
- Use the journal challenge (see above) to be ready with lots of examples of how God's Story and your story have connected as you learn the stories of others. But remember, relationships are more effective than debates. Someone who does not believe in God's existence may get their eyes opened as they notice something unique about your "story".

Turn on your Christmas lights!
Geminid meteors were hard to see this year
Many observers reported being disappointed by last week's peak of the annual Geminid meteor shower. Some said clouds spoiled the view. Others reported a scarcity of Geminids and wondered whether the shower is in decline.
These medium-speed meteors appear to emanate from near the bright star Castor, in the constellation of Gemini the Twins — hence the name "Geminid."
The track of each one does not necessarily begin near Castor, nor even in the constellation Gemini, but it always turns out that the path of a Geminid extended backward passes through a tiny region of sky about 0.2 degree in diameter (an effect of perspective). In apparent size, that's less than half the width of the moon. As such, this is a rather sharply defined radiant as most meteor showers go, suggesting the stream is "young" — perhaps only several thousand years old.

Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (ESV)
What does Jesus teach us about being His "light" in today's God's Story scripture?
I can't say it any better than the study notes in Tyndale's Life Application Study Bible notes:
If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like. We hide our light by (1) being quiet when we should speak, (2) going along with the crowd, (3) denying the light, (4) letting sin dim our light, (5) not explaining our light to others, or (6) ignoring the needs of others. Be a beacon of truth - don't shut your light off from the rest of the world.
Did you notice in today's story that the meteor stream putting on the holiday light show is "young" — perhaps only several thousand years old.
It doesn't matter how young or old you are in earthly years or spiritual years. Jesus calls each of us to put on His "light show".
No doubt most scientists would want us to believe that these meteors evolved from some monkey-shaped rocks or something...but we know that ultimately this burning light comes from the the one Who created the rocks - Jesus!
In today's story, observers said that clouds spoiled the view of the "light show". Others reported a scarcity of Geminids and wondered whether the shower is in decline.
Without Christ's power, our "lights" will be clouded and scarce.
With Christ's power, we can be His light in this dark world.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Praise your Heavenly Father for shining the light of Christ into your life. Confess any way in which you have been hiding the light of Christ in your life. Ask His Spirit to make you willing to humble yourself so that your life will draw only on the power of the Son in you.
- Review the LAB study notes and be honest about one way you tend to hide Christ's light. Pray about this every day until you see this part of your life light up!
- Using a Bible study guide, look up ten verses that use light as an analogy for living the Christian life.
- For one week, write down at least one daily opportunity Jesus gave you to be a light to someone. At the end of the week, evaluate what you have learned.
- For the next two weeks, let the lights of the Christmas holidays be a reminder to let your light shine for others to see.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Make it your Christmas goal to shine Christ's light toward one person who is in spiritual darkness...this might be a friend at school, at work, or a family member.
- Ask your friends and family if they heard about the meteor light show last weekend? Use it as a conversation starter to find out what they believe to be the ultimate source of the meteors? Trust Jesus to show you if this is the time to talk about how He has brought you from darkness into His light.
- Write a note of appreciation to another follower of Jesus who has been "letting a little bit of light into the world".

Christmas tree controversy?
Christmas tree at MSU's Strong Hall will share space with menorah
SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State University administrators decided to put a Christmas tree back in the lobby of Strong Hall, along with other religious holiday symbols. A department head removed the 20-foot tree after a faculty member who is Jewish complained that it was insensitive to other religions.
After learning about the complaint and the removal of the tree, administrators scheduled a meeting to discuss appropriate holiday decorations at the school. That meeting is now canceled.
“We decided this is the right thing to do, and I am glad there was widespread agreement about it,” President Mike. Nietzel said in a news release. “Missouri State is an institution at which many different religions are represented, and we try to be sensitive to the many views people hold.
“After having had a chance to air this out a bit more and consider the various perspectives of our campus community, I am happy that the Christmas tree will be back up along with the many others that were already on campus."
The tree was back in the lobby and university employees were decorating it. University officials said in the news release that a menorah will be next to it "to represent the inclusiveness of the fall Holiday season.
MSU administrators apparently believe courts have ruled Christmas trees are secular symbols if they do not bear religious decorations. The department head who put the tree up said she didn't use any religious symbols on it. However, an attorney who studies legal religious issues believes the Supreme Court has ruled that a Christmas tree is inherently a symbol of a religious holiday, no matter how it's decorated.

Galatians 3:10-14
The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. (ESV)
Today's God's Story scripture is about the best Christmas tree ever. Why did God choose it for us? Why will there always be controversy about God's "Christmas tree"?

God chose the cross of Christ to be our "Christmas tree". It is and always will be full of controversy because Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection provide the only way to Heaven. Christ came as a baby and grew up to be the perfect, sinless sacrifice for the sin of all cultures.
There's nothing artificial or decorative about God's "Christmas tree" for us. God's forgiveness for our sins is not about us trying to be good enough or about some religious tradition. Jesus willingly hung on "the tree" so that we could receive God's ultimate gift!
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for His love which sent His Son, Jesus, to be born so that He could die for us on "a tree". Take several minutes to just meditate on this truth and worship Christ...
- Whenever you put up your Christmas tree (real or artificial) decorate it with something personal that reminds you of your gratitude to Christ for giving His life on "the tree" for you.
- If you have never trusted Christ to be your Savior, receive His forgiveness by telling Him that you believe He died on "the tree" to pay the penalty for your sins and that He rose from the dead to prove He is your Savior. Ask Him to come into your life and take over. (Contact us at 3story.org so that we can send you info to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus.)
How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?
Today's story about the removal of a Christmas tree at the college is one of many that are in the news about the controversy related to Christ in Christmas. Use it in conversation with those in your storysphere. Ask them if they have heard about the controversy over Christmas trees in the news? Ask them what they think? Ask if you can share why you know the best Christmas tree ever will always be full on controversy?

"Less than truthful"

Vick said he accepted responsibility for his actions, but U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson said he wasn't so sure.
"I'm not convinced you've fully accepted responsibility," Hudson told Vick, who arrived in court wearing the black-and-white striped prison uniform he was issued when he voluntarily surrendered Nov. 19 to begin serving his sentence early.
Despite the early surrender, a public apology and participation in an animal sensitivity training course, Vick was denied an "acceptance of responsibility" credit that would have reduced his sentence. Federal prosecutors opposed awarding Vick the credit.
Dogs that did not perform up to expectations were killed by electrocution, hanging, drowning and other violent means by the dogfighting ring. Hudson said evidence, including statements by the co-defendants, showed Vick was more directly involved than he admitted. Hudson also mentioned that Vick had been deceptive on a polygraph test. Though that evidence was not admissible in court, the results were discussed.

Numbers 32:23
23 But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.
1 John 1:8-9
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (ESV)
This follow up story about Michael Vick going to prison for his crimes has been all over the news. Obviously, he took his selfish desires to the extreme. But what amazes me is that he must have thought he could get away with it!
Now he faces consequences which will change his life for a couple of years...it will be interesting to see if it changes him for the rest of his life?
Even at his sentencing, the judge reminded Vick that he seemed "less than truthful".
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about the consequences of being "less than truthful"?
Be honest. What were you thinking the last time when you thought you could get away with a little sin? What happened? Do you think you still might get caught some day? And how often do we rationalize that it's no big deal to be "less than truthful".
Moses, the author of Numbers, gets right to the point doesn't he? We can be sure that our sins will find us out. Often, our sin is discovered because we're arrogant and think that we're invincible. Even if we're not caught, or if others don't find out, we must remember that the Lord knows our sin. Sin will always affect us in some way. There are always consequences. We are responsible.
Thankfully, we have a loving God who has graciously taken on the responsibility for our forgiveness. When His Son, Jesus, died on the cross, He made it possible for us to always have our accounts cleaned up.
We can't get away with it, but Jesus died for it. That's God's grace.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God that His Holy Spirit makes you aware of your sin. Claim 1st John 1:9 right now for any sin that is "finding you out". Thank Jesus for His complete forgiveness and ask Him to help you make choices every day that will honor and please Him.
- Whenever you see a NFL football game or the next time you pet a dog, remember that no one gets away with anything forever.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story scripture and your story to others?
- Use today's story about Michael Vick going to prison for his crimes as a way to talk to others in your storysphere (your circle of influence) about the consequences each of us face for our sins. Listen to your friends' perspective. Be honest about your own sins. Share how you found forgivness and hope because Jesus died and rose again so that you wouldn't have to face the eternal consequences of sin.
- Use this DAILYBIDE as a topic for discussion with your small group or youth group or forward it to a friend.
- You probably know someone who is trying to get away with sin. Don't use this DAILYBIDE to judge them or preach at them. Instead, be an example of God's grace as you figure out ways to care and show them unconditional love. They just might open up and talk to you, because Jesus will help them see that He cares and forgives through your example.

The evil continues...
How can we begin to explain evil in our world?
Report: Colorado gunman warned of attacks online
Matthew Murray in 2002
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - With the identity of the gunman now known, residents of two Colorado towns were left Tuesday with deeper questions: What drove Matthew Murray to a rampage that claimed four lives at a church and missionary training center, and were there warning signs that could have prevented it?
Autopsy results show Murray, who was kicked out of a missionary training center where the first shooting occurred, killed himself, police said.
Murray, 24, was struck multiple times by a security officer at New Life Church Sunday but died after firing a single shot at himself, the El Paso County Coroner's Office concluded after an autopsy.
In between his two deadly shooting sprees, Murray apparently posted a furious threat on the Internet to kill Christians. But whether the warning reached police before he struck again was unclear Tuesday.
The warning — and other anguished, despair-filled messages over the past few months — were posted by someone using the screen name "nghtmrchld26." The postings paint a picture of a home-schooled Colorado youth once affiliated with the Youth With a Mission program — as 24-year-old Murray had been.
"I'm coming for EVERYONE soon and I WILL be armed to the (expletive) teeth and I WILL shoot to kill," Sunday's posting by nghtmrchld26 said.
"God, I can't wait till I can kill you people. Feel no remorse, no sense of shame, I don't care if I live or die in the shoot-out. All I want to do is kill and injure as many of you ... as I can especially Christians who are to blame for most of the problems in the world. You Christians brought this on yourselves," Murray wrote, according to the station, which did not identify the site. "All I want to do is kill and injure as many of you as I can especially Christians who are to blame for most of the problems in the world."
The online threats appear to include whole passages lifted from a manifesto written by Eric Harris, one of the teens who carried out the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School — 13 miles from Murray's hometown, the Denver Post reported.

John 8:44
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Luke 13:1-3
Repent or Perish
13:1 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. (ESV)
How does today's God's Story scripture help us understand the evil in our world?
Please know that I am not claiming to have all the answers - only God does - and we won't completely understand them until eternity in Heaven begins.
But today's scripture provides us some insight into the unspeakable evil that occurred in Omaha last week and in Colorado this week. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those killed.
Obviously, Satan had a role in the evil done by the killers.
Jesus described Satan as an evil murderer who hates all Truth and is the father of lies. We may never know the whole story of the 24-year-old killer in Colorado, but at some point in his life, Matthew Murray bought into the lies of Satan. He may have believed the lie that he had been a victim and therefore his action was justified. He may have believed the lie that life doesn't matter. He may have believed the lie that God didn't love him or could not help him. He may have believed the lie that there is no hell or consequences for sin.
Today's scripture also helps us see that sin has a role in the evil that happened in the killing of the innocent victims in Colorado. Each of us is responsible for our own sin, but sometimes it is the sinful actions of others that result in pain and suffering for innocent people. That's the point that Jesus is making in Luke 13:1-3. Innocent worshippers were murdered by the sinful action of Pilate.
Young people preparing for missions and young people attending church were innocently pursuing service to God and worship of Him, but the evil, sinful action of Matthew Murray has changed many lives forever.
None of this seems fair, but we live in a sinful, evil world where Satan is at work.
Take heart. This won't last forever. Jesus said so.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Talk to God right now. Ask Jesus to use His Truth to help you understand His perspective on why evil things happen in our world. Thank Him for being in control. Thank Him that He welcomes you, His child, to ask questions and listen...
- Pray every day this week for God's Spirit to give you insight into His answers for your questions.
- In your journal, write down your thoughts and questions as you reflect on today's DAILYBIDE.
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Pray for someone you know who seems to be suffering or going through a painful time, due to Satan's influence or the sinful actions of others. Ask this person how you can help.
- Sit down with other friends in your youth group, at school, at work, or with your family and get their perspective on "why such evil things happen in this world"? Be ready to quietly trust Jesus to lead you as you share part of your story and/or God's Story.
- Pray for the family and friends of those recently killed in both Omaha and Colorado to experience the comfort that only God can provide. Pray that God will use these tragic events to draw people to His grace.

A grudge can be very dangerous
Colorado Church Gunman Had Grudge Against Christian Group, Cops Say
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The gunman believed to have killed four people in a pair of shooting sprees at a megachurch in Colorado Springs and a missionary training school near Denver had been thrown out of the missionary school a few years ago and had been sending it hate mail, police said in court papers Monday.
The gunman was identified as Matthew Murray, 24, who was home-schooled in what a friend said was a deeply religious Christian household. Murray's father is a neurologist and a leading multiple-sclerosis researcher.
Five people — including Murray — were killed, and five others wounded Sunday in the two eruptions of violence 12 hours and 65 miles apart. Police said Monday that forensic evidence found at both crime scenes linked both shootings to Murray.
The first attack took place at Youth With a Mission, a training center for missionaries in the Denver suburb of Arvada; the other occurred at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, where Murray was shot by a security guard, though investigators said he may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Through both investigations it has been determined that most likely the suspect in both shootings are one in the same," police said in court papers.
Colorado Springs police said the "common denominator in both locations" was Youth With a Mission. The training center maintains an office at the 10,000-member New Life Church.
"It appears that the suspect had been kicked out of the program three years prior and during the past few weeks had sent different forms of hate mail to the program and-or its director," police said.
In a statement, the training center said health problems kept Murray from finishing the program. It did not elaborate. Murray did not complete the lecture phase or a field assignment as part of a 12-week program, Youth With a Mission said.
Police gave no immediate details on the hate mail. And the training center said that Murray left in 2002 — five years ago, not three — and that no one there can recall any visits or other communication from him since then.

Matthew 5:38-39 (CEV)
Retaliation
38You know that you have been taught, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." 39But I tell you not to try to get even with a person who has done something to you. When someone slaps your right cheek, turn and let that person slap your other cheek.
After reading part of God's Story scripture today, what do you think Jesus is teaching us about revenge?
Let's be honest. When someone "does us wrong", or we think that someone has treated us unfairly, our first inclination is to get even. This is a practical example of our wanting to give in to the pull of our old sinful nature. Often, we'll do or say something that is stupid, immature and sinful in response. We try to excuse our behavior by thinking or saying, "I was just doing to him/her what he/she did to me."
But Jesus has a different way for us to respond. Our desire should not be to get even but to get loving! "Turning the other cheek" is not natural. We can do this only when we allow the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit in us to control us. The result will be the strength to love, forgive, and serve those who hurt us. We can be Christ-like to them, regardless of how they feel or act toward us.
Today's story about the young man shooting innocent people at those churches in Colorado is hard to understand. But think about this - the killer's hate mail and murders started with a grudge...and he wanted to get even.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Talk to God right now. Confess any actions or attitude of revenge that you have done or had toward someone else. Thank God for His forgiveness through Christ's death on the cross. Ask Jesus to empower you to not get even with others, but instead be loving and forgiving to them.
- Memorize today's scripture to remind yourself how to be like Jesus in one of the most common challenges we face almost every day.
- Whenever you hear more about the hate-filled shootings in Colorado, let Jesus remind you to evaluate whether or not you are following his teaching about getting even in your relationships at school, at home and at your job.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story scripture and your story to others?
- Pray every morning for Jesus to help you get to loving rather than getting even.
- If you need to forgive someone, do it today. If someone needs your forgiveness, give it today.
- Look for those moments when you can be an example and an encouragement to others to not take revenge. It may not be a popular move on your part, but it may open up some conversations which give you the opportunity to learn the stories of others and share part of your story.
- Pray for God to bring comfort to the families and friends of the victims in all of the recent shootings. Pray that the truth of Christ's love will somehow be seen in these horrible examples of our human sinfulness.

Jesus knows their pain
Mayor: ‘We will not accept this evil act’
Mourners light candles for Omaha mall victims
OMAHA, Neb. - Mourners lit eight red candles and five blue ones Thursday for each of those killed or injured one day earlier after a troubled young man opened fire in a department store before taking his own life.
The ceremony was held at St. John’s Church on Creighton University’s campus, where The Rev. Roc O’Connor read the names of the victims aloud, KETV-TV reported.
"We can see the light in the midst of darkness. We can encounter hope in the midst of despair," the Rev. Andy Alexander said.
At least three of those killed and injured were Creighton alumni and had developed deep roots in the area.
"This is something that is going to hit home for everyone who lives here," mourner Robyn Eden told KETV-TV. "Small community — regardless of how many people live here. This is a small town."
President Bush offered sympathy Thursday to the families of the victims.
“I was in Omaha just before the shooting took place, and I know what a difficult day it is for that fine community,” said Bush.
“The victims and their loved ones are in the prayers of Americans,” Bush said. “The federal government stands ready to help in any way we can, and the whole nation grieves for the people of Omaha.”
Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey also expressed shock and sadness at the Westroads Mall shooting at a news conference Thursday.
“Today, we are still reeling form the events that few have ever imagined would take place in Omaha,” he said. “We will not accept this evil act to occur in our community.”

John 11:33-37 (NLT)
33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34
They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about how Jesus cares and responds to us?
Jesus comforted his friends in their grief. He felt their pain. He cared for them. He cried with them.
Here's some more insight from Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE:
11:33-37 John stresses that we have a God who cares. When Jesus saw the weeping and wailing, he too wept openly. Perhaps he empathized with their grief, or perhaps he was troubled at their unbelief. In either case, Jesus showed that he cares enough for us to weep with us in our sorrow. This portrait contrasts with the Greek concept of God that was popular in that day - a God with no emotions and no messy involvement with humans. Here we see many of Jesus' emotions - compassion, indignation, sorrow, even frustration. He often expressed deep emotion, and we must never be afraid to reveal our true feelings to him, He understands them for he experienced them. Be honest, and don't try to hide anything from your Savior. He cares.
When I saw the story of the people being shot by the teenager in Omaha, my heart and prayers went out to their families and city. This tragic story of senseless evil, confusion, and pain will have our attention for some time, but it will continue for the victims' families for a lifetime and for the victims and shooter for eternity.
The mourning of Omaha made me think of today's passage. Jesus cared for his friends when Lazarus died. In the middle of grief, blame, unbelief, sorrow and questions, Jesus loved, cried, and demonstrated his authoritative power.
You may never experience the level of grief and confusion found in today's story. But Jesus cares for you in the same way He cared for the friends of Lazarus and the way He is caring for those connected to the deaths of the victims in Omaha.
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Praise God that He is in control no matter what. Thank Him for His compassion and care. Thank Him for sending Jesus to show us what His love is really like. A historic story of forgiveness
Sunday Morning in
During the ensuing hours, a pounding fury swallowed up the quiet waters as, one by one, American battleships were hit and began tilting into the sea—succumbing to the surprise invasion. Fuchida’s fleet mercilessly bombed nearby airfields, dry docks, and barracks. And 3,622

Romans 10:9 (NIV)
9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Luke 23:34 (NIV)
34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
How does today's God's Story scripture connect to the stories of DeShazer and Fuchida?
DeShazer remembered hearing about Christianity and how it changed hatred into love. Suddenly overcome by a longing to examine the Bible to see if it held the secret, he began begging his captors for one. Finally, two years into his imprisonment, a guard granted his request, but said he could have it for only a few weeks. DeShazer dove in with wild abandon, eagerly reading chapter after chapter—first the Old Testament, then the New. He began to understand that his sin—including his hatred for the Japanese people—was keeping him separated from God. But it also became clear that he could be reconciled with his Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ. On June 8, 1944, DeShazer came across Romans 10:9: "… if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." With a believing heart, DeShazer confessed his sins to God and discovered what true forgiveness is all about.

Nose job?
Ashley Tisdale's Beak Tweak

Ashley Tisdale has been felled by that most dastardly (if at times convenient) diagnosis -- the deviated septum. The "High School Musical" starlet makes a preemptive admission opens up to People about the "rhinoplasty procedure" she endured on Friday.
"Growing up I always knew I had a deviated septum on the right side of my nose, which caused trouble breathing," a still-recovering Tisdale, 22, told the mag on Monday from her Los Angeles home. "The older I got, the worse it got. I went to get it checked out, and the doctor told me the septum was 80 percent deviated and that I had two small fractures on my nose."
That led to last week's five-hour schnoz-fixing op, which the actress says she was so totally dreading.
"I was completely scared," she reveals. "I wasn't looking forward to the surgery at all. I actually had trouble sleeping for a week before."
"I didn't do this because I believe in plastic surgery. I did this to help my health," she proclaims to the mag. "I literally almost could not breathe out of the right side of my nose."
So, why admit it, other than to get ahead of any before-and-after tabloid and blog speculation?
"I want my fans to know the truth. I'm not someone who is going to act like I had nothing done," says Tisdale, who adds she's not a nip-tuck fan and wouldn't suggest it to anyone. "I just want to be honest because my fans are everything to me."

1 Samuel 16:6-7 (NLT)
6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Psalm 139:14 (NLT)
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about God's perspective on our appearance?
In today's passage, we find Samuel being directed by the LORD to find a man to be the king of Israel. Evidently, Eliab was HOT! He was tall and good looking - you know the kind - someone sure to be admired by the people! (But he didn't make the cut or People Magazine!)
Thankfully, God judges by faith and character, not our looks or lack of them. Since only God can see our true inner qualities, only He can accurately judge people.
Do you tend to judge people by outward appearance? Do you feel judged by others for your appearance?
God warns us about judging by outward beauty. Most of us spend hours every week trying to look good! Now, there's nothing wrong with trying to look nice and take care of our bodies, but we should do even more to let God develop our inner character and beauty.
So what do you think? Did Ashley Tisdale really need surgery on her nose or did she do the plastic fix so that she can look good for HSM 3 some day? The tabloids will speculate, but maybe only she and God know the real answer.
What are you doing to maintain and improve your inner qualities?
How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
- Thank God for creating you to be so unique! If you struggle with your self image as it relates to your physical looks, ask Him to give you His perspective - that you are "fearfully and wonderfully made"! If you have been judging others because of their appearance, ask God to forgive you and give you the desire to get to know the inner qualities of others.
- Every time you look in a mirror this next week, thank God for His creativity, because He sees you as beautiful!
- Memorize Psalm 139:14 for God's perspective on you!
How can we connect today's story and God's Story scripture and our story to others?
- Use today's story about the "High School Musical" star to talk to your friends about what you are learning about God's perspective on our physical appearance.
- Think about someone you know who is often seen by the crowd as not one of the "beautiful" people. Look for ways to get to know his or her inner qualities and then affirm this person for one of those characteristics.
