Got your ears on?

Jesus wants us to listen and....

Man's ear bitten off in Greek soccer brawl

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Four men have been arrested on the island of Crete after part of a man's ear was bitten off during a brawl after Greece's 4-1 loss to Turkey in a European Championship qualifier.

The incident occurred Saturday near the town of Ierapetra during a fight between Bulgarian workers and local Greek men who had been watching the match on television, police said Tuesday.

Local businessman Dimitris Tsimbibakis, 40, was hospitalized after a man bit his ear. He told authorities he had intervened to try and break up the fight but was beaten by four Bulgarian men.

The fight apparently started after the Bulgarian men cheered Turkey's goals.

Greece travels to Malta on Thursday, while Turkey hosts Norway in Group C.

Mark 4:9

And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (ESV)

What does Jesus want us to hear when we read today's God's Story scripture?

You've probably heard today's verse before even if you don't remember ever reading it in the Bible. It is often quoted, but what does it really mean?

Jesus is not talking about ear buds or speaker phones, nor is He trying to get us to act interested in someone telling a long story that we've already heard many times.

When Jesus says we should "hear", He wants us to listen to His words, know them, and do them.

If we're serious about letting Jesus be Lord (in control) of our lives, we will immediately apply His words in our attitudes, our decisions, our values, our lifestyle, our relationships, our families, our spending, our praying, our worship, our use of time, our....

Now the guy in today's story (the one who got his ear bit off) doesn't have to do today's scripture because he doesn't have ears to hear. Yeah, right!

Actually, today's story got me thinking about one reason why we as Christ's followers so often don't have ears to hear - it's because we are self-centered and often focused (or even fighting over) on what really isn't that important in the big picture of life. It's all about God's purposes - not ours!

To hear Jesus' words we must humble ourselves before Him. What is Jesus saying to you today? Are you listening?

How can we apply today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Start by taking several minutes to be alone in silence with Jesus. Tell Him you want to hear from His Spirit working in your mind and heart. Now listen....
  • Jesus may have pointed out His love to you; His promises for you; His encouragement to you; His patience; His offer of forgiveness for something you need to confess; His instruction to obey...ask Him for the faith and power you need to apply His words...
  • Today's verse is in the context of one of Jesus' parables. Numerous times in the gospels, Jesus makes the connection between ears and "doing". In the next month, read through Matthew or Mark and watch for the instruction to use our "ears to hear".
  • Go to http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/ and look up "ears to hear" for an interesting study on how these words are used in God's Word.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • With your friends and family who need Jesus, be intentional in the next two weeks about listening to their words. Remember to ask them questions that give them the opportunity for you to "hear" what they are thinking, feeling, wondering about...
  • With your friends and family who know Jesus, share today's DAILYBIDE with them and what you learned. Maybe you can even talk about what causes you to not have your spiritual "ears" on?

Does God always rescue us?

The lost boy scout is found!

Homesick Boy Scout rescued after 3 nights

McGRADY -- Michael Auberry just wanted to see his family and friends when he wandered away from his Boy Scout troop's campsite in Western North Carolina's rugged mountains.

"He was homesick," said Kent Auberry, Michael's father. "He started walking and thought he'd hitchhike home."

Michael, a 12-year-old Boy Scout from Greensboro, spent three nights lost in the rocky and steep mountains in Doughton State Park before being found last week. Rescuers, including a search dog named Gandalf, found Michael walking along a rushing creek about a half-mile from where he disappeared.

Michael was dehydrated and hungry for store-bought Grandma's cookies and chicken fingers, but he was in good spirits as he recovered at Wilkes Regional Medical Center in North Wilkesboro, his father said.

Temperatures dipped into the 20s at night. Michael was wearing jeans, a base layer, a fleece, a winter coat, gloves and a baseball cap.

He drank water from a stream, and told his parents he prayed he wouldn't get sick from it.

The Auberrys and authorities were still trying to piece together Michael's story Tuesday evening. When Michael was found, he was still wearing the clothing he had on when he disappeared, except for his hat and glasses.

"Michael said he's most concerned (about) making up his schoolwork," Auberry said. "He's worried about make-up work in Miss Self's class. So if Miss Self could give him a break, he would be grateful."

The search included between 80 and 100 rescuers from surrounding counties, said Dave Bauer of the National Park Service, who was in charge of the search.

Auberry said his son probably knew authorities were looking for him, but he was unsure how much time had passed as he wandered through the woods looking for his troop. "What he tells us is he was on the move," Auberry said. "He slept in tree branches. He curled up under rocks."

Gandalf, the dog that found Michael, is a 2-year-old Shiloh shepherd named after the wizard in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Gandalf's trainer, Misha Marshall, of Chesnee, S.C., and her team had been looking for Michael for about two hours when Gandalf found him in an area of 30-degree to 40-degree rocky slopes, she said.

Auberry said Michael and his family are grateful for the support and thank everyone involved in the search. "He wants to thank Gandalf especially -- although he knows Gandalf ate his peanut butter crackers," Auberry said.

National Park Service spokesperson Tina White was near Michael's family when word came that he had been found alive. "I saw lots of tears," she said. "I saw lots of hugs and smiles."

Proverbs 11:6-8 (NLT)

6 The godliness of good people rescues them;
the ambition of treacherous people traps them.

7 When the wicked die, their hopes die with them,
for they rely on their own feeble strength.

8 The godly are rescued from trouble,
and it falls on the wicked instead.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about God rescuing people from trouble?

When you quickly read today's scripture, it seems to say that God is always going to deliver us (Christ's followers) from trouble.

This is another example of why it's so important to study all of God's Word and why some verses can be misunderstood if they are read out of the full context.

One of the themes of Proverbs is the difference between the life of a godly person and an ungodly person. Not every verse is a promise from God, but rather a general truth that is intended to challenge people to live for God rather than themselves.

Today's verses point out two different paths in life but they don't apply to everyone in every circumstance. Trouble is still a normal part of life for God's people. Even if we are abiding in Jesus every day, we're still going to experience problems and the need to be delivered.

If we follow the path of God's wisdom, we can be confident that God will ultimately rescue us, but it may mean that we experience ongoing suffering until He rescues us from this earthly life and takes us home to His eternal Heaven.

But a wicked person will continue to make their own trap of destruction, without the hope of being delivered for eternity. Sobering, isn't it?

Without knowing the true spiritual condition of the lost 12-year-old Boy Scout, you have to like the fact that he was praying for God's help to survive. Doing the same will help us stay on the path of Godly wisdom.

We can always pray for God to deliver us, but are we willing trust Him for His ultimate rescue?

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Praise God that He has the ultimate, perfect plan for your life! Ask Him to give you the faith you need to always be ready and willing for the "ultimate rescue". As His child, if you need some sort of rescue in your life, ask Him for it right now. Thank God that because of Christ in your life, you can look forward to eternal life, even if it's not God's plan to deliver you from your earthly trouble right now.
  • In your journal, keep track of how God delivers you from different troubles in your life. Review this every week to see what God is doing and what you are learning.
  • Try reading through the book of Proverbs in one month. One chapter a day will help you see the big picture of God's truths.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Pray for a Christ-like attitude toward others and their troubles, because God may want to use you to help rescue someone.
  • Lots of movies and tv shows have a rescue theme. When watching with family and friends who need Jesus, look for the opportunity to share your story of how Jesus rescued you.
  • Share today's DAILYBIDE with another follower of Jesus who needs some encouragement while waiting to be delivered by God.

A shining idol?

There's controversy for Chris Sligh.
'Idol' contestant's faith questioned
Chris Sligh, the "American Idol" contestant who has won fans thanks to his curly mop of hair and soulful voice, has a few people concerned with his departure from strictly Christian music. But for most others in this city of 56,000 about 100 miles southwest of Charlotte, N.C., Sligh has become a hometown hero.

Jonathan Pait, a spokesman for fundamentalist Bob Jones University where Sligh attended for several years, said: "We really are somewhat disappointed with the direction he has gone musically."

Local fans — some wearing fake glasses and curly wigs and calling themselves the "Fro Patro" — gather each week at restaurants and bars to cheer Sligh on. The local newspaper has been tracking his progress on its Web site.

Sligh, a 28-year-old son of missionaries who spent much of his childhood overseas, kept his spot among the 11 remaining finalists last week with a rendition of "Endless Love."

People who know Sligh well say that he may be singing rock 'n' roll on television, but he's always clear about the faith that motivates his music.

"He's not going to back away from the fact that he's a Christian," said Chris Surratt, pastor of Seacoast Church, where Sligh has been music leader for more than two years. "He's going to let that shine through in what he does."

Hundreds of people gather each week to hear Sligh's music at Seacoast, where his electric guitar and vocals have become an integral part of services, Surratt said.

Support for Sligh also is strong at North Greenville University, the small Baptist school he attended for several years after leaving Bob Jones in the late 1990s.

Cheryl Greene, the professor who helped Sligh hone his vocal talents, said just because Sligh may not be singing strictly Christian-themed songs shouldn't reflect on the depth of his faith.

"It would be like me being in a jazz band," Greene said. "You can be a Christian or non-Christian. It's a style of music."

But Greene said she still has worries over Sligh's long-term spiritual journey.

"Is he going to stand strong by his true Christian morals?" Greene said. "Christianity is a lifestyle ... and there are things in your life that you do need to stand for."

John Jeter, the owner of a Greenville nightclub where Sligh has performed with his band, said Sligh's wholesome attitude and his faith come through in his music.

"It speaks well to the fact that it's not all blood, guts and trash," said Jeter. "Music doesn't have to be filthy. You can have a good time in a good environment, and Chris is proof of that."

Matthew 5:14-16

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about being Christ's light?

Light is very interesting. It is noticed and it shows the way. This is true of a big building full of lights that sits on a hill or of a small candle on a table.

From reading today's story about Chris Sligh, it's obvious that different Christians have different expectations for other believers. Some want Chris to sing only Christian songs while others don't think it's a big deal. Some seem to think that Chris must be a bright light on a hill while others think he should be a small candle on a table. (Personally, I'd rather see Chris belt out a secular rock song with a likable humility, rather than some Christian song done with an "attitude".)

What does Jesus want Chris to do?

Well the specific answer is between Jesus and Chris, but I do know that more than anything, Jesus just wants Chris to be faithful by letting Christ's character shine through his life.

Regardless of impact, light is something that Jesus said should characterize our lives.

Sometimes we hide our light by not speaking up when we should, by going along with the crowd when we shouldn't, by letting sin dim our light, or perhaps by ignoring opportunities to meet the needs of others.

We don't have to be a major 'American Idol' spotlight. Just being a candle of God's Truth will be noticed by someone and show them the way.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Ask yourself if there anything in your life that is hiding Christ's light?
  • Let Jesus help you see any need for His forgiveness before He replaces it with His light.
  • Ask Jesus to help you be faithful to the little opportunites He gives you to be a light. Thank Jesus for always being the light to show you your next step in life as you serve Him.
  • Using a Bible study guide (usually in the back), look up ten verses that use light as an analogy for living for Christ and following Him.
  • For one month, write down every opportunity that Jesus gives you to be a light to someone. At the end of the month, evaluate what you have learned and make any needed lighting adjustments.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to the lives of others?

  • Pray every day for Jesus to show you one opportunity to bring His light into someone's life. It might be as simple as a friendly smile at school or at work to someone who is lonely. It could be the affirmation of "way to go" to someone! It could be (you fill in the blank).
  • Have an 'American Idol' party and use it as an opportunity to be Christ's light as you laugh and talk.
  • Pray for Chris Sligh to simply be faithful to Jesus and not worry about critical comments.
  • Write a note of appreciation to another follower of Christ who has been "lighting it up".

All in the family?

Angelina and Brad adopt another child.

Jolie Names New Son Pax Thien

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam -- Actress Angelina Jolie has adopted a 3-year-old boy she picked up at an orphanage in southern Vietnam.

Nguyen Van Trung, director of the orphanage, confirmed that Vietnamese officials had approved the adoption. Jolie was expected to meet with U.S. consular officials, who must review the adoption before a passport can be issued for the boy.

The child's name is Pax Thien Jolie, said Trevor Neilson, Jolie's adviser on international affairs. Pax means peace in Latin, but Neilson said he didn't know whether Jolie had chosen it for that reason.

"This morning he woke up at 6, just like all the children," Trung said. "He put on new clothes, and he was very excited."

Trung said the child at first seemed shy with his mother-to-be, he said. When Jolie and the boy left, the orphanage staff and children gave them a round of applause.

Someone carried the boy outside to a waiting Toyota minivan with dark windows, and his face was shielded from photographers with an umbrella.

The same vehicle later arrived at the Department of Justice in Ho Chi Minh City, where Vietnamese adoption officials said a ceremony was conducted at which Jolie officially took possession of the child.

After about half an hour, two vehicles left the building, followed by a buzz of reporters and photographers.

He said that she complained in a telephone call to him that paparazzi had attacked her car as she left the orphanage, pounding on the door and throwing things under the vehicle to prevent it from going.

"Angelina understands the interest in her life, but we hope that the paparazzi can have some restraint when it comes to the safety and emotional health of this boy," Neilson said.

Ephesians 1:3-5 (NLT)

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. 4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

In today's God's Story scripture, why is Paul using the word "adoption" to explain what happens when someone becomes a follower of Jesus?

Let's look at Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes:

1:5 God's "unchanging plan" is another way of saying that salvation is God's work and not our own doing. In his infinite love, God has adopted us as his own children. Through Jesus' sacrifice, he has brought us into his family and made us heirs along with Jesus (Romans 8:17). In Roman law, adopted children had the same rights and privileges as biological children, even if they had been slaves. Paul uses this term to show how strong our relationship to God is. Have you entered into this loving relationship with God? For more on the meaning of adoption, see Galatians 4:5-7.

Isn't the news about Angelina Jolie (and Brad Pitt) adopting this child interesting? Thousands of children are adopted every day, but Jolie, who is not a follower of Christ, and who has struggled in relationships, puts an adoption in the headlines. This is the reality of being famous. Her adopted child will be well taken care of and by God's grace will somehow come to recognize his need to be adopted into another family some day - God's family.

Have you been adopted into God's family? Jesus Christ, the "famous one" died and rose again to pay the penalty for your sins. Receiving His gift of forgiveness gives us all the privileges of being God's child. Wow!

This spiritual adoption doesn't put us in the headlines, but we become part of the greatest family both now and forever!

How can you connect today's God's Story scripture to your life?

If you have never been "adopted" into God's family, tell God right now that you want Christ to be your Savior. He will forgive you of all your sins, come into your life and promises you eternal life! (If this is you, email us so we can encourage you and help you in your new relationship with God).

If you have been "adopted" into God's family, praise your Heavenly Father for the privilege of being His child! Confess any way in which you have not been acting like you belong to His family. Thank Him for His complete forgiveness (this is one of the privileges of being His child) and ask His Spirit to empower you to live up to His family name every day.

How can you connect today's story, God's Story scripture and your story to others?

  • Use the story of Angelina Jolie adopting this child to share part of your story. You can simply say, "Did I ever tell you that I'm adopted?"
  • Pray for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and their family to come to know Christ as Savior and be adopted into God's family.
  • On your own, or with your youth group, look into "adopting" a needy child through an organization like Compassion International. You can financially support and pray for a child and make a difference in a life forever. Go to: http://www.compassion.com

Rock the Boat!

Do you want to experience a joy that never ends?

Jump In!

Have you ever been in a small boat or a canoe when some yahoo (maybe you) stands up? Any movement will cause someone to yell "Hey sit down! You're rocking the boat! You're gonna knock us overboard!"

Do you think you would be willing to stand up spiritually, rock a few boats and go overboard to be with Jesus? Check out Peter's story...

John 21:1-9; 18-19 (NLT)

1 Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. This is how it happened. 2 Several of the disciples were there—Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples.

3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.

4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?”

“No,” they replied.

6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.

7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. 8 The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. 9 When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread....

...18 “I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

1 Peter 1:8-9 (NLT)

8 You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. 9 The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about how to experience a joy that never ends?

After His resurrection, Jesus performed this fishy miracle for seven disciples. As soon as John realized it was Jesus on the shore, Peter responded by jumping overboard and swimming to Jesus! Talk about rocking the boat! Nothing was going to keep Peter from being close to Jesus!

Intimacy with Christ doesn't always feel warm and fuzzy or comfortable. Are we willing to dog-paddle 300 feet in cold water to be near our Savior? Are we determined to follow Christ no matter what, even if it gets tough or painful?

Jesus was telling Peter that he would some day die by crucifixion, but he experienced lasting joy to the end and we can too. How?

Look again at what Peter wrote (1st Peter 1:8-9) to Christians everywhere. He understood that real joy is for believers who consistently experience intimacy with Jesus. Want joy? Go overboard! Jump in!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Admit to Jesus anything that has come between you and Him. It might be something good like friends, school, extra-curricular activities or your job. It might be poor choices or sinful habits. Thank Him for pursuing intimacy with you and for His constant call to follow Him.
  • Memorize 1st Peter 1:8 to remember what brings joy. Adjust your priorities and schedule to make sure you're "swimming to Jesus" every day.
  • Go swim some laps in a pool (inside for you cold climate readers) and pray while you are swimming. Listen to Jesus. He will communicate to you through His Spirit.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

The next time you go swimming or boating, talk to those in your storysphere about what you learned in today's DAILYBIDE. For an extra effect, splash 'em real good when you jump in!

Do you have any "dark secrets"?

Our attempts to "cover up" will always rob us of joy.

Those terrible tabloids!

When you're standing in the checkout line at the store, have you ever noticed how often the gossip tabloids feature headlines about some celebrity attempting to "cover up" some scandal in their life? Or if you ever watch "Entertainment Tonight", you know that you will hear stories (exclusive, of course) about the revealing "truth" regarding some famous person's scandal. The nightly news almost always runs a segment about some alleged "cover up" in the government or big business.

How about us? We often try to hide "dark" secrets don't we? It might be about starting a rumor about someone we don't like. How about a sexual relationship or hiding a certain magazine in the bedroom or a certain web site? Maybe it involves lying to parents about a party? Could it be cheating on a test or hiring someone to write your term paper? Stealing an item that's worth only a buck is no big deal right? Then why do little "dark" secrets bother us?

Psalm 51:5-12 (NLT)

5 For I was born a sinner—
yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6 But you desire honesty from the womb,
teaching me wisdom even there.

7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Oh, give me back my joy again;
you have broken me—
now let me rejoice.
9 Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.

According to today's God's Story scripture, what is the connection between covering up sin and having joy?

Even if we have never murdered someone or committed adultery, we all have something in common with King David. Unconfessed sin will chase joy out of our lives.

David wrote this psalm after being confronted about having an affair with Bathsheba and murdering her husband. His guilt had driven a wedge between God and himself. He cried out for God to forgive him and restore the joy of their relationship.

Attempting to cover up our sins is useless. Even if others don't discover our "secrets", God knows everything about us all the time. If you are a believer (someone who has trusted Jesus to be your Savior), the guilt of unconfessed sin will gut your joy faster than anything else in life. It makes intimacy with God impossible. Here's the good news! The loving Heavenly Father will forgive us and make us pure again. We still have to face some earthly consequences, but God will bring back our joy!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Confess our sins to God...all of them...every one that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Thank God that according to 1st John 1:9, He will cleanse you and make your relationship perfect again. Thank Him for restoring your joy just as He did with King David. Remember that David continued to be "a man after God's own heart" according to God's Word. Ask Jesus to help you desire His heart every day.
  • For the next two weeks, do a daily evaluation with God to see if there's anything in your life that needs to be confessed. Enjoy His joy!

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Follow through on the challenge above (for two weeks, do a daily evaluation with God to see if there's anything in your life that needs to be confessed. Enjoy His joy!) One of the results may be that you want to make things right with others and tell them about the joy you've received from God.
  • Talk "tabloids" with one of your friends or family members who need Jesus. Ask him or her if they believe all the "secrets" about famous people in the news? Use this as an opportunity to talk about your story. Share how Jesus is helping you uncover your "secrets" and forgiving you. Spread His joy!

We used to get along with each other, but...

Are you missing out on joy because you have a relationship that's missing?

Is there any conflict in any of your relationships right now?

It kind of takes the joy right out of your life doesn't it?

Hebrews 12:14-15 (NLT)

14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about the relationship between conflict in our relationships and our relationship with Christ?

Something that always robs us of our joy is unresolved conflict in relationships. Perhaps you've been fighting with your parents for weeks, or quarreling with your siblings, holding a grudge against someone, or you're barely on speaking terms with __________? Bitterness will paint our lives with jealousy, anger and immorality. It will keep us from experiencing the joy of Christ.

But when we're in right relationship with God, the Holy Spirit controls our attitudes and His power can bring healing to the hurt that causes bitterness in relationships. There's no guarantee that the other person will respond in the right way, but when we do our part in apologizing, forgiving and loving unconditionally, we will experience the joy of Christ again!

Let Christ help you picture healing in a hurting relationship by seeing that person through the eyes of Christ.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Confess to God any grudge you have been holding toward someone. Thank Him for forgiving you. Ask Jesus to give you strength, patience and love to resolve your conflict. Let His Spirit fill you with joy!
  • Whenever you see pictures of family members and friends, thank God for those relationships and ask Him to help you see them and love them the way He does.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

Let Jesus help you identify one relationship in your life that is loaded with conflict. Pray for this person every day until God gives you the right time to go to this person and do your part in resolving the conflict.

Something missing in your life?

A famous band member takes his own life.

Delp Suicide Note: "I am a lonely soul"

ATKINSON, N.H. -- Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston who killed himself last week, left behind a note in which he called himself "a lonely soul," according to police reports released Thursday.

The note was paper-clipped to the neck of Delp's shirt when police found his body at his Atkinson home, on the bathroom floor, his head on a pillow. He had sealed himself inside with two charcoal grills; toxicology tests showed he had committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

"Mr. Brad Delp. J'ai une ame solitaire. I am a lonely soul," the note read.

Delp joined Boston in the mid-1970s and sang two of its biggest hits, "More than a Feeling" and "Long Time." He was cremated Wednesday, after a private funeral earlier in the week.

His fiancee, Pamela Sullivan, called police March 9 after noticing a dryer vent tube connected to the exhaust pipe of Delp's car. In the garage, police found a note taped to the door leading into the house.

"To whoever finds this I have hopefully committed suicide. Plan B was to asphyxiate myself in my car."

In another note on a door at the top of the stairs, Delp cautioned that there was carbon monoxide inside.

"I take complete and sole responsibility for my present situation. I have lost my desire to live," he wrote. The note also included instructions on how to contact his fiancee: "Unfortunately she is totally unaware of what I have done."

Sullivan told police that Delp "had been depressed for some time, feeling emotional (and) bad about himself," according to the reports.

Philippians 4:10-14 (NLT)

10 How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. 11 Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. 14 Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about how to find contentment?

The context of Paul's words is about how God was using his friends to help provide what he needed to do God's work, like food and money.

Paul understood the difference between happiness and joy. Why? He was content in any circumstance he faced because he could see life from God's point of view. The key was to draw on Christ's power for strength whether he had plenty or whether he was in need. Paul was full of joy, because his perspective was, "I'll trust God, no matter what."

I don't know the whole story about rocker Brad Delp. But it seems that money and fame didn't bring him contentment. He was lonely. He took his own life. Personally, I think this is a graphic illustration of what everyone must eventually understand. There is a difference between happiness and joy. Brad Delp probably experienced happiness at times, but evidently he never found joy. This joy comes only in knowing Christ and trusting Him, no matter what.

Do you understand the difference between happiness and joy?

Happiness is a feeling based upon what is happening around us - if my life is going well - then I'm happy! Joy is a perspective based upon trusting the loving God who has a perfect plan for my life, even if I don't feel happy about my circumstances.

One of the biggest joy stealers in life is unmet expectations.

How about you? No matter what life's circumstances you face, can you trust Christ to give you His joy?

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Confess to your heavenly Father any way in which you need to admit discontent. If you struggle with often wanting more, ask His Spirit to remove that desire and give you contentment in all circumstances. Thank Him for loving you, meeting your needs, and providing lasting joy!
  • This next week, every time you feel unhappy, stop and ask yourself why? If it's about some expectation that isn't being met, pray for strength to face your disappointment and get ready for God's joy.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Ask Jesus to help you reach out to one "lonely soul" this week.
  • With your friends or family who need Jesus, use today's story about rocker Brad Delp to have a conversation about what brings contentment and meaning to life. Remember to ask questions and listen for their perspective rather than dumping a mini sermon on them. You will learn more about their stories and Jesus will show you how to share part of your story and God's story.
  • Talk with others about the difference between happiness and joy. Remember that one of the biggest joy stealers in life is unmet expectations. For example, how do you respond when:

1.you don't make the grades

2.your parents don't give permission

3.you get cut from the team

4.you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend

5.you don't get the job promotion

6.you don't receive the award

Do you get cranky or depressed when you don't get what you want or feel you deserve? It's normal to feel unhappy for a time, but do unsatisfied expectations steal your joy?

Confession without guilt?

The 9-11 mastermind terrorist confesses but is not sorry.

Al Qaeda Chief Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Confesses to Planning Sept. 11, Gitmo Transcript Shows

WASHINGTON — Terror mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed calmly explained to a U.S. military tribunal that his murderous plots were simple acts of war, comparing Al Qaeda leader Usama Bin Laden to American Revolutionary War hero George Washington.

Mohammed's incredible confession to a Guantanamo tribunal was detailed in a transcript released Wednesday by the Pentagon in which he calmly listed 28 terrorist attacks — topped by Sept. 11 — since the early 1990s that he either directly planned and three more that he had hand in.

The gruesome attacks range from the suicide hijackings of September 11, 2001 — which killed nearly 3,000 — to a 2002 shooting on an island off Kuwait that killed a U.S. Marine.

Many plots, including a previously undisclosed plan to kill several former U.S. presidents, were never carried out or were foiled by international counterterror authorities.

"We consider we and George Washington doing same thing," Mohammed lectured to the tribunal, and in a rambling explanation spoke coldly about how "the language of war is killing."

"I was responsible for the 9/11 operation from A to Z," Mohammed said in a statement read Saturday during a Combatant Status Review Tribunal at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

1 John 1:8-9 (NLT)

8 If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about confession of our sins?

Check out this insight from Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes:

1:9 ...God wants to forgive us. He allowed his beloved Son to die just so he could offer us pardon. When we come to Christ, he forgives all the sins we have committed or will ever commit. We don't need to confess the sins of the past all over again, and we don't need to fear that God will reject us if we don't keep our slate perfectly clean. Of course we should continue to confess our sins, but not because failure to do so will make us lose our salvation. Our relationship with Christ is secure. Instead, we should confess so that we can enjoy maximum fellowhip and joy with him.

True confession also involves a commitment not to continue in sin . We wouldn't be genuinely confessing our sins to God if we planned to commit them again and just wanted temporay forgiveness. We should also pray for strength to defeat temptaion the next time we face it.

Today's story about the cold-hearted terrorist and his "confession" combined with today's scripture is very convicting to me.

Sometimes I'm a terrorist toward God. Making my own opportunities, I will continue my "war" against God. I "confess" my actions and attitudes. But I'm really not being honest about my sin. "Confession" can make me feel better for a little bit, but then my guilt (from His Spirit) reveals to me that deep down I know or even plan on repeating my sinful ways.

How about you? Can you identify with this?

God is so amazing with His grace! He still wants to forgive me and will.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Take a few minutes and let God's Spirit point out to you any sin that needs genuine confession. Now take God at His Word. Confess (meaning admit to God your sin; agree with Him that it is wrong; ask for His power to change and the strength to defeat temptation the next time you face it) and receive His loving forgiveness.
  • For one month, try writing out your confession of sins to God. Taking the time to do this will give you the opportunity to let God help you think through the reality of your sin and His grace. Thirty days of this approach to confession just might affect your relationship with Jesus in a huge and intimate way.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Share what you learned today with another follower of Christ and find out more about his or her story on confessing sin.
  • Use today's DAILYBIDE as a resource for your small group or youth group.
  • Think about someone in your storysphere with whom you are having some pretty serious and personal discussion about God's Story. Bring up the story about the terrorist making a "confession". Ask your friend about his or her take on the need for forgiveness for our actions. Share more of your story by being honest and vulnerable about your experience with "confession".

Are you out of your mind?

Don't even try to fake it if you're not!

Mom Taught Her Two Kids To Fake Retardation

A woman admitted that she coached her two children to fake retardation starting when they were 4 and 8 years old so she could collect Social Security benefits on their behalf.

Rosie Costello, 46, admitted in U.S. District Court that she collected more than $280,000 in benefits, beginning in the mid-1980s. Most was from Social Security, but the state social services agency paid $53,000.

Costello pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the government and Social Security fraud. Her son, Pete, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this month. Federal prosecutors in Seattle said authorities had not yet located her daughter, Marie.

According to the plea agreement, Costello began coaching her daughter at age 4, and later used the same ruse with her son. He feigned retardation into his mid-20s — picking at his face, slouching and appearing uncommunicative in meetings with Social Security officials.

2 Corinthians 5:13-15

13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about being out of our "right minds" for Christ?

The apostle Paul was out of his "right mind" for Christ! Paul knew that it was Christ's love that drove him to live "beside himself" for God's glory! Like Paul and Christ's disciples, we should be willing to die for Christ's cause, because He died and rose from the grave for us.

Jesus Christ's disciples began the spreading of Truth all around the world because they believed in God's Kingdom cause. They believed that the death and resurrection of Christ was the Truth that would provide eternal hope to every person who would trust Jesus as Savior.

Today's story about the mom teaching her kids to act retarded is so sad and disgusting! There's enough pain in the world already without people faking retardation in order to get money.

Do you what else is sad and disgusting? It's when peole try to fake a commitment to God in order to gain some benefits or attention.

Following Jesus requires a willinginess to give up everything, including our lives. Faking it will eventually catch up with an impostor, forever.

Are you willing to follow Jesus no matter what? His Holy Spirit will empower you to be "our of your mind" for His honor and glory!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Praise God for His Holy Spirit's power to enable you to be out of your "right mind" His Kingdom! Confess any way in which you have been relying on your own strength to live each day. Invite the Holy Spirit to control you 24-7. Ask Jesus to give you the desire to follow His instructions to serve Him with your life, even it means giving up your life some day for living out His love and sharing His Truth.
  • Begin each day for the next two weeks by simply praying for the power of God's Holy Spirit to be evident in your life. Write down what you learn.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

For the next couple of weeks, watch for everything that is fake around you. When you notice this, let Jesus remind you that His love will make you "out of your right mind" in order to communicate God's Story and your story to others who need Christ's good news. Being real makes all the difference!

Kicked out!

They weren't pretty or popular enough...

Troubled Sorority Cut From Depauw

Greencastle, Ind. (AP) A sorority accused of kicking out nearly two dozen members who weren't pretty or popular enough was evicted from DePauw University, which said the values of Delta Zeta did not fit with the small private college.

The sorority has said the 23 evictions were based on the members' lack of commitment to recruiting new members. But those asked to leave have charged that they were removed because of their appearance, contending they were active and supportive members of their sorority.

University President Robert G. Bottoms said Monday the school was unhappy with Delta Zeta's policies and actions, and with some of the postings on its Web site in response to the controversy that followed the evictions.

"I came to the conclusion that our approaches to these issues are just incompatible," he said in a news conference.

Bottoms said in a letter delivered Monday, that beginning in the fall, the sorority would no longer be recognized as part of the Greek system at the school. He asked the sorority to leave the campus in Greencastle, 40 miles west of Indianapolis, before then.

The sorority's members have long had a reputation as being known more for academics than partying, and their chapter was widely known among students as the "dog house."

1 Samuel 16:1-7

David Anointed King

16:1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about outward appearance?

In today's passage, we find Samuel being directed by the LORD to find a man to be the king of Israel. Evidently, Eliab was HOT! He was tall and good looking - you know the kind - someone sure to be admired by the people! (But he didn't make the cut!)

Thankfully, God judges by faith and character, not our looks or lack of them. Since only God can see our true inner qualities, only He can accurately judge people.

God warns us about judging by outward beauty. Most of us spend hours every week trying to look good! Now, there's nothing wrong with trying to look nice and take care of our bodies, but we should do even more to let God develop our inner character and beauty.

With God there is no such thing as a sorority, just family.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Be honest. Do you tend to judge people by outward appearance? Do you feel judged by others for your appearance?
  • Confess to God any way in which you have been judging others by their looks or lack of, or by their popularity. Ask Jesus to help you see others the way He does.
  • If you have been hurt or judged by others for your outward appearance, tell Jesus and let Him remind you of how He sees you!
  • Be honest. What are you doing to maintain and improve your inner qualities? (The answer is that we must be willing to let God give us the faith and desire to abide in Jesus every day. Then our inner qualities become more Christ-like.)

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Remember the quote by the President of Depauw: "I came to the conclusion that our approaches to these issues are just incompatible," - The same is true for those of us who are followers of Christ. Judging others by their appearance is incompatible with the heart of God.
  • Talk over this important issue with other followers of Christ. How has our culture affected your attitude toward physical beauty? Are you judging others at school, at work, or even in your family? Hold each other accountable to change the culture around you.
  • You know kids at school or people you work with who probably feel judged by their appearance. Every day, be like Jesus and be intentional about encouraging someone or affirming someone for their inner qualities. This will probably lead to opportunities for you to learn their stories.

Meet the "Barbie Bandits"

Wrong choices led....

'Down the Wrong Road'

That's how the father of one of the 'Barbie Bandits' describes their fall from grace. How nice middle-class girls became strippers and alleged bank robbers.

At a strip club in Doraville, Ga., is where two dancers, Ashley Miller (known as "Adrienne") and Heather Johnston (who went by "Charlie"), met recently and became fast friends. The pairing proved ill-fated. Both were reportedly on a destructive tear. Johnston, 19, was heavily using drugs, according to a fellow stripper at the club. And Miller, 18, had struck up with a reputed drug dealer. The two reached a nadir last week when they robbed a bank in Acworth, Ga.

Miller and Johnston became a media sensation. Caught on a security camera wearing designer shades and giggling as they made off with the loot, they became known as the "Barbie Bandits." They were so sloppy that cops cracked the case in two days, arresting Miller, Johnston, the bank teller—who police say was in cahoots with the two—and Miller's male companion, who allegedly hatched the plot. Now the four face a mix of theft and drug-related charges. But the most intriguing question remains: How did two girls who grew up in comfortable middle-class homes with a wealth of opportunity wind up as exotic dancers and accused crooks?

There was a time when they seemed full of promise. Johnston, 19, was a straight-A student and a nimble tennis player, says her uncle, Jay Johnston. She received a HOPE Scholarship, awarded to Georgia students with at least a 3.0 GPA, according to her father, Edward Johnston. Miller, 18, wasn't strong academically but had a big heart and volunteered at a nursing home, says her mother, Joy Miller. But after graduating from high school last year, each fell in with a shady crowd, according to neighbors and relatives. Miller started going out with Michael Chastang, 27, known as "Skinny," who Joy Miller describes as troubled. Her daughter, she says, wanted "to take him under her wings and make him all better." Johnston, for her part, began dating a guy that her father disapproved of, according to her uncle. That may have contributed to a schism with her parents. She moved out last fall, and in December, police arrested her for trying to break in to her parents' home while they were away. "It just goes to show you how quick a kid can be swayed from on-track to dead-end," says Johnston's uncle.

As the girls await their fate, their parents are praying for their redemption. Johnston "went down the wrong road" and "lost her way from the Lord," says her father. But "God puts people in our paths to bring us back to him." Joy Miller, who visited her daughter at the Cobb County jail on Sunday, says Ashley was coping as best she could and even talked about returning to school to study nursing. "She is a great kid," says Joy. "She's made a bad choice," but "everything happens for a reason." Maybe the reality of prison time will finally set her and Johnston straight.

Proverbs 5:21-23

21 For a man's ways are before the eyes of the Lord,
and he ponders all his paths.
22 The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him,
and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.
23 He dies for lack of discipline,
and because of his great folly he is led astray. (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about staying on the right path in life?

Maybe at some point in their lives, Ashley and Heather (the Barbie Bandits) read today's scripture. If they did, they did not apply it. My point here is not to trash them. It's just the opposite - I feel sorry for them. According to their family and friends, it's pretty obvious that their trouble didn't start overnight. These girls started making wrong choices along the way and now they are way off the right path in life.

God offers them a new path, one of purpose, hope and a home in heaven forever.

God offers this path to everyone. But we must be willing to give up control of our own lives and let God be in control.

Satan uses our passion for worldly folly to hold us captive to our own sin. But (that's one of the best words in the Bible) Jesus Christ sets us free and gives us daily direction to help us become more like Himself. We will desire His Spirit to tell us what to do and what not to do! That's being on the right path!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
  • Thank God for His path to forgiveness and freedom from sin. Remember that Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes unto the Father, but through me." (John 14:6) Ask God's Spirt to point out to you any way in which you have been wandering down the wrong path. Ask Him to empower you to walk in His path step by step and day by day.
  • Pray every day a prayer of willingness to submit to the Holy Spirit's control of every part of your life.
  • Pray every day for the Lord to lead you along the best path in His perfect plan for your life.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture, and our story to others?

  • Pray for Jesus to give you His heart, love, and wisdom in recognizing when your friends or family members are making choices that may lead them down the wrong path.
  • When Jesus helps you see someone on the wrong path, let Him help you make sure that you're willing to be caring rather than judgmental, forgiving rather than condemning, real rather than plastic, and a listener rather than a "know it all".
  • Spend time with this person and be ready for Jesus to help you learn his or her story and make the right connections.
  • Share today's DAILYBIDE with someone who is struggling down the wrong path of life. Do this with humility and love.
  • Pray for the "Barbie Bandits" to turn the controls of their lives over to Jesus Christ.

Straighten up!

It's hard to walk when you're bent over.

Oh My Aching Back!

The photo of this guy is not me (Byron), but it could have been. Today's story is my own.

Most of you are too young to have experienced back pain, unless you have fallen or been injured in sports.

Being middle-aged, I've had my share of "aching backs", but this week was the worst of my life.

Last Monday, I did something really dangerous - I stepped out of the shower and lifted one leg to dry it off. Pop! My lower back went into a spasm and I couldn't straighten up! Extreme pain! That's the last time I dry off my feet after a shower! I was so frustrated...

Next stop, the Minneapolis airport. My wife dropped me off. Bent over and unable to walk upright, I noticed people looking at me and nodding as if to say "Yes, we did evolve from apes!"

It was quite humbling to use wheel chair assistance and ride a cart with three elderly ladies, two with walkers and one with a cane. Smelling like old lady perfume, I received lots of looks as I boarded the plane and struggled to my seat to fly to Denver to work on 3Story!

As I write this, I have just returned from my second visit to a chiropractic doctor. Between getting the "parts" put back in place, some pain killer and a bunch of prayer, I'm close to walking upright again. I fly home today, but I'll skip the shower!

Psalm 84:11-12

11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
12 O Lord of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you! (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about the importance of living to please Christ?

"Walking uprightly" is all about living an obedient life for the purpose of pleasing Christ in all of our thoughts and actions.

"Walking uprightly" allows us to look to our loving Father to receive His protection, His power, His blessings, and all that He loves to give us because He loves His children!

"Walking uprightly" is the key to being able to trust God, no matter what. With His Spirit controlling us, we see life with a Kingdom view. Bent over, we see only our limited and self-absorbed perspective.

Don't live in needless pain. Straighten up!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Let Jesus help you understand why you have been walking bent over spiritually. Confess any disobedience and let Him forgive your aching back!
  • Whenever you find yourself struggling to trust God, tell Him. Let Him show you what needs to be "put back in place" in your life.
  • Watch out for attack from the enemy. Satan will surprise you when you don't have both feet on Christ's way. A spiritual spasm can happen quickly and really mess you up.
  • For the next week, take a one minute walk every day totally bent over. Believe me, you'll remember today's scripture.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?

The next time you have back pain or someone you know has an aching back, talk about today's DAILYBIDE. This will be a great way for you to be vulnerable and share more of your story, which may include some painful spiritual memories of not walking uprightly. Be sure to talk about how Jesus helps you learn to stand up and walk right again!

Ready to take action?

Find out what Jenna and Jesus have to say about this...

Jenna Bush Challenges Kids To Get Involved

Jenna Bush, in a rare interview, says her forthcoming book for teens — about a 17-year-old single mother in Panama who is living with HIV — will end with a "call to action."

HarperCollins announces today that it's publishing Bush's Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope this fall. It will be illustrated with photographs by Mia Baxter, a former classmate of Bush's at the University of Texas.

The president's daughter, 25, says the book is not political. It's aimed at "getting kids thinking and involved," Bush said Monday by phone from Panama, where she has worked since September as an unpaid intern for UNICEF.

Bush, a former public school teacher in Washington, D.C., says: "I'm aware that not all kids can pick up and fly to Panama. I'm very lucky."

But, Bush says, "there's so much they can do" to deal with issues of "exclusion" — from research on HIV discrimination to "inviting new kids to sit with them in the cafeteria."

The book grew out of her UNICEF job to "put a face on statistics" and document the lives of children in Central and South America who live in extreme poverty.

Jenna and her sister, Barbara (who works at a New York museum), have tried to avoid publicity and have been protected by the White House. But, she says, "I'm willing to give up some of my anonymity" to promote the book and "start a dialogue with kids."

A book tour is planned in schools, libraries and bookstores. "This is not about me," she adds, "but the kids I met here."

Mark 10:42-45

42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (ESV)

What does Jesus teach us about greatness in today's God's Story scripture?

Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes provide some great insight:

10:42-45 James and John wanted the highest positions in Jesus' Kingdom. But Jesus told them that true greatness comes in serving others. Peter, one of the disciples who had heard this message, expands the thought in 1 Peter 5:1-4.

Businesses, organizations, and institutions measure greatness by personal achievement. In Christ's Kingdom, however, service is the way to get ahead. The desire to be on top will hinder, not help. Rather than seeking to have your needs met, look for ways that you can minister to the needs of others.

I don't know Jenna Bush's story or her perspective on following Christ and serving Him. But you have to admire her for her desire to serve others and encourage others to do the same.

Very few of Christ's followers will ever be the children of a President or people who achieve greatness according to the world's perspective. But Christ-like servants always achieve greatness according to God's perspective. Take action and serve others!

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?
  • Thank Jesus for being the essence of greatness through service. Confess any way in which you may have been striving for worldly success rather than greatness in God's Kingdom. Ask Jesus to empower you with the humility needed to be great for God's glory.
  • Memorize today's passage as a reminder of how to be a Christ-like servant.
  • Read Peter's teaching on this subject in 1 Peter 5:1-4.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • Get together with other Christ-followers (maybe your youth group or small group) and write a "Top Ten" list of people you see as Christ-like servants. What are they doing that you think makes them great? Let this list motivate you to come up with a plan to serve others as a group and individually. It might be a missions project or sponsoring a needy child or.......
  • Every day, ask Jesus to show you how He wants you to serve someone.
  • Strive to serve one person every day right where you live. It might be an idea like Jenna Bush's "inviting new kids to sit with you in the cafeteria."

Drunk or filled?

Study: 7.2 million U.S. teens binge drink

Surgeon general urges shift in attitude toward alcohol consumption

A new study on underage drinking shows improvements nationwide. At the same time several midwest states, including Iowa, still have some work to do. Among other things, the federal report asks kids ages 12 to 20 how many times they drank alcohol in the last month. The highest level of underage binge drinking occured in North Dakota, but Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska were also at top of the list.

The Acting Surgeon General says its part of a nationwidel trend, with 11 million youth drinkers across the country. "Underage drinking has not been very high on our radar screens for a long time, and more than that, i think we've said underage drinking is a right of passage, and they'll outgrow it," says Acting Surgeon General Dr. Kenneth Moritsugu.

Moritsugu says people need to remember underage drinking is illegal. Studies show it also has a negative impact on the development of teenagers brains and their cognitive capabilities.

Ephesians 5:18

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, (ESV)

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about getting drunk?

Paul is talking about the use of alcohol and how it can influence the mind and body.

Look at the notes from Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE:

5:18 Paul contrasts getting drunk with wine, which produces a temporary "high" to being filled with the Spirit, which produces lasting joy. Getting drunk with wine is associated with the old way of life and its selfish desires. In Christ, we have a better joy, higher and longer lasting, to cure our depression, monotony, or tension. We should not be concerned with how much of the Holy Spirit we have but with how much of us the Holy Spirit has. Submit yourself daily to his leading and draw constantly on his power.

The surgeon general is reminding everyone that studies show that drinnking has a negative impact on the development of teenagers' brains and their cognitive capabilities.

God's Word is reminding us how it can lead to a troubled self-centered life....which is the complete opposite of abiding in Christ.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

Six killed in college bus plunge!

How will this story of mourning affect other stories?

Ohio baseball team was on board when vehicle went off overpass in Atlanta

ATLANTA - A small college in Ohio was thrown into mourning Friday after a bus carrying the school’s baseball team tumbled over the side of a highway overpass and slammed onto the pavement 30 feet below, killing four students and the husband-and-wife drivers.

The team from the close-knit, Mennonite-affiliated Bluffton University was making its annual spring trip to Florida before daybreak when the charter bus crashed, scattering bags of baseball equipment across the road and splattering blood on the overpass. Some of the athletes climbed out the roof escape hatch, dazed and bloody.

“I just looked out and saw the road coming up at me. I remember the catcher tapping me on the head, telling me to get out because there was gas all over,” said A.J. Ramthun, an 18-year-old second baseman from Springfield, Ohio, who was asleep in a window seat and suffered a broken collarbone and cuts on his face from broken glass. “I heard some guys crying, ‘I’m stuck! I’m stuck!”’

Investigators said the driver apparently mistook the exit ramp for a lane and went into the curve at full speed. It was dark at the time, but the weather was clear.

On the 1,150-student campus in Bluffton, about 50 miles south of Toledo, students and community residents — some wiping away tears — filled the gymnasium to grieve and learn more about what happened. When news of the crash appeared on television, students on campus desperately tried to reach some of the athletes on their cell phones.

Sophomore Courtney Minnich said that at a college as small as Bluffton, “even if you didn’t know everybody, it will hurt, because you’ve seen them on campus.”

John 11:17-37 (NLT)

17 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”

23 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”

25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him.

30 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them.

They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

What does today's scripture teach us about how Jesus cares and responds to us?

Jesus comforted his friends in their grief. He felt their pain. He cared for them. He cried with them.

Here's some more insight from Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE:

11:33-37 John stresses that we have a God who cares. When Jesus saw the weeping and wailing, he too wept openly. Perhaps he empathized with their grief, or perhaps he was troubled at their unbelief. In either case, Jesus showed that he cares enough for us to weep with us in our sorrow. This portrait contrasts with the Greek concept of God that was popular in that day - a God with no emotions and no messy involvement with humans. Here we see many of Jesus' emotions - compassion, indignation, sorrow, even frustration. He often expressed deep emotion, and we must never be afraid to reveal our true feelings to him, He understands them for he experienced them. Be honest, and don't try to hide anything from your Savior. He cares.

When I heard the story of the deadly bus accident involving the college baseball team, I immediately thought of today's passage. Jesus cared for his friends when Lazarus died. In the middle of grief, blame, unbelief, sorrow and questions, Jesus loved, cried, and demonstrated his authoritative power.

You may never experience the level of grief and confusion found in today's stories. But Jesus cares for you in the same way He cared for the friends of Lazarus and the way He is caring for those connected to the Bluffton University tragedy.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Praise God that He is in control no matter what. Thank Him for His compassion and care. Thank Him for sending Jesus to show us what His love is really like. Thank Him that you can trust Him in times of tragedy and sorrow. Pray right now for the families and friends of those impacted by the Bluffton University accident. Thank Jesus that your identity in Him will never be mistaken. He knows you and cares for you.
  • Read the entire story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. You will be reminded of Christ's power and purpose.
  • The next time you are driving or riding in a vehicle, let Jesus remind you that life can be brief, but that He cares for you no matter what.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story scripture and our story to others?

  • As often as God helps you remember, continue to pray for His comfort upon those affected by the Bluffton University tragedy. Pray also that people will come to follow Jesus as the media will continue to follow this story.
  • Bring up today's story in conversation with friends and family who need Jesus. Ask them what the most difficult tragedy or accident is that they have experienced? Listen carefully and trust Jesus to show His care through you.

Where will Anna Nicole Smith be buried?

Anyone else getting tired of this story?

Anna Nicole Smith To Be Buried In The Bahamas; Mother Appealing Court's Decision

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Anna Nicole Smith will be buried in the Bahamas beside her son, the court-appointed guardian of her infant daughter decided last week, but Smith's mother is appealing the decision.

The judge presiding over the Smith burial hearing ruled that Smith's remains should be given to the court-appointed guardian ad litem representing her 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn.

Broward County Circuit Court Judge Larry Seidlin said the guardian, attorney Richard Milstein, had to consult with Smith's estranged mother Virgie Arthur, her companion Howard K. Stern and her ex-boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, when he made his decision about where Smith would be buried. Birkhead and Stern both claim they are Dannielynn's father.

Arthur is appealing the decision, her attorney told FOX News.

A paternity hearing to determine the identity of Dannielynn's father may be held, also in Florida, but under a different judge.

Matthew 8:18-22 (NLT)

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he instructed his disciples to cross to the other side of the lake.

19 Then one of the teachers of religious law said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 But Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”

21 Another of his disciples said, “Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me now. Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead.”

What does today's God's Story scripture teach us about a total commitment to living for Jesus Christ?

First of all, don't you wish that everyone involved with the Anna Nicole Smith story could understand God's Story? I was trying to resist writing about this celebrity mess, but this story is in the news every day! So, let's find out if there's a connection with today's scripture.

This is a somewhat difficult passage to understand, so let's look at the study notes from Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE:

8:21, 22 It is possible that this disciple was not asking permission to go to his father's funeral but rather to put off following Jesus until his elderly father died. Perhaps the was the firstborn son and wanted to be sure to claim his inheritance. Perhaps he didn't want to face his father's wrath if he left the family business to follow an itinerant preacher. Whether his concern was financial security, family approval, or something else, he did not want to commit himself to Jesus just yet. Jesus, however, would not accept his excuse.

Jesus was always direct with those who wanted to follow him. He made sure they counted the cost and set aside any conditions they might have for following him....the decision to follow Jesus should not be put off, even though other loyalties compete for our attention. Nothing should be placed above a total commitment to living for him.

There are many lessons from the Anna Nicole Smith story, but one of the most obvious is that when people are focused on themselves - sin, greed, heartache and hopelessness become the focus of life.

Sadly, the people in Anna's life are more concerned about the resting place of her body (and her money) rather than the resting place of their eternal souls.

Jesus is not telling us to ignore responsibility to family, but he wants us to make sure that we are focused on His eternal Kingdom. Following Jesus has a cost and we must be willing to let go of any earthly self-serving motives.

How can we connect today's God's Story scripture to our lives?

  • Take a few minutes to ask God to point out to you any way in which you are making excuses to not follow Jesus completely right now. Listen.....talk....confess....receive His forgiveness and hope....
  • For two weeks, keep a written daily journal where you honestly evaluate if your day was more about serving yourself or Jesus?
  • Ask another follower of Jesus to pray for you and hold you accountable in your desire to follow Jesus every day, without excuse.

How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?

  • Pray for each of your family members to see God's Story in you and to let Jesus change their life story.
  • Whenever you see ongoing news accounts of the Anna Nicole Smith story, pray that followers of Jesus will come in contact with those involved. Pray especially that Dannielynn, the 5-month-old daughter, will grow up to know and follow Jesus.
  • Use this story in conversation with someone in your storysphere who needs Jesus. Find out if he or she is tired of the media talking about the burial place of Anna Nicole Smith? This could be an opportunity for you to share more of your story and why you know the location of your eternal resting place.
