Passions become fights!
Have you thought about the cause of quarrels and fights?
Students expelled after fight planned on MySpace
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A dozen high school students were expelled for an on-campus brawl over who got invited to a party, a fight school officials said was arranged on the social-networking hub MySpace.com.
The school board in this St. Louis suburb voted unanimously Monday to expel the Edwardsville High School students through the end of the school year for the Nov. 9 melee. Three were seniors who were barred from graduation ceremonies next spring, Superintendent Ed Hightower said Tuesday.
No one was seriously injured in the fight involving 11 girls and one boy.
Two groups of students had been squabbling for a month about who had been invited to the party, and administrators had been working with them and their parents to avoid a conflict, Hightower said.
Seven students agreed in writing Nov. 6 to stop "disrespecting'' each other, keep to themselves and report problems to adults. The students were told they faced police involvement or "exclusion'' from the school if they broke the pact.
Just two days later, Hightower said, students posted MySpace messages finalizing plans to fight the next day. The fight ensued as planned in the high school's commons area, Hightower said.
"There were numerous interventions, numerous opportunities for these students to resolve their differences,'' but they chose to fight instead, Hightower said.
MySpace is grappling with ways to curb the use of the site for such purposes, distributing a guide for school administrators and "letting them know that anything that can happen on a school playground also can happen online,'' said MySpace's chief security officer, Hemanshu Nigam.

James 4:1-3
Warning Against Worldliness
4:1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the reason for quarrels and fights?
Perhaps James should have logged on to MySpace with the kids in that high school, where the online quarreling turned into an over the line fight.
James is writing today's scripture to followers of Christ. He makes it real simple. Quarrels between believers are always harmful and come from the evil desires within us.
There were lots of evil desires being expressed at the high school in Illinois. Students were letting their passions go wild on guarding their "space" and who would get into their "space".
We often let our self-centered passions go wild, don't we? When we focus on worldly values like possessions, money, status, power and popularity, we develop an attitude that anything but Christ-like.
Then we drag these attitudes into our friendships, families and churches. When we don't get our way, we quarrel and fight. Even if we don't plan a physical fight, we often throw hurtful comments and display actions that are just as crazy!
So what do we do? James says we need to pray with the right motives. Rather than selfishly reaching for what we want, we must reach out to each other with Godly attitudes and actions. This will happen when we surrender our way to God's way and trust Him to give us what we really need.
Abiding in Christ means we focus on Him, face to face. This will result in a passion for Jesus and compassion for others.
How can we connect today's scripture to our lives?
- Talk to God right now. Confess any part you have had in a quarrel or conflict with another person. Ask God to give you the humility and courage you need to go to that person and ask for forgiveness. Ask God to help you surrender your passions to His desires for you. Thank Him for empowering you to do your part to get along with His family and encourage your brothers and sisters in Christ.
- Pray every day for God to help you focus on His plan for you rather than your plan for pleasures. Then YourSpace will give way to Jesus.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our stories to others?
- If you've been "fighting" with someone in your youth group, church, school, work place, or family - take the first step to make the relationship right again. Remember that it's better to do this face to face rather than online.
- Rather than using MySpace, consider learning the stories of others and sharing your story by using the My Story and Tell Your Story sections of 3Story.org.

Here's the 'flip' side
Do you have self-control?
Vick makes obscene gesture to home crowd
Vick used both hands to deliver the gesture and flashed an angry look toward the handful of fans remaining in the Georgia Dome.
Those who hung around booed the home team loudly after its dismal 31-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
"First and foremost, I would like to apologize for my inappropriate actions with fans today," the quarterback said in a statement released by the Falcons. "I was frustrated and upset at how the game was going for my team, and that frustration came out the wrong way."
Vick had another rough day passing, completing nine of 24 for 84 yards, but that wasn't entirely his fault. The Atlanta receivers dropped at least five passes, and the offensive line didn't provide much protection. Vick was sacked three times and hit a dozen more behind the line of scrimmage after throwing passes.
Leaving the field, he let his frustration get the best of him.
"That's not what I'm about. That's not what the Atlanta Falcons are about," Vick said in his statement. "I simply lost my cool in the heat of the moment. I apologize and look forward to putting this incident behind me."

Proverbs 29:11
11 A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
but a wise man quietly holds it back.
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about losing control and getting some self-control?
The book of Proverbs teaches us Godly wisdom for practical living. An unwise person "vents" to the extreme when feeling frustrated by circumstances and/or annoyed by others.
It's our human tendency to retaliate when someone or some situation annoys us. But as we've all experienced, this doesn't solve the issue and usually results in more trouble. Just ask Michael Vick who is about to be fined and have $20,000 removed from his bank account.
Here's the 'flip side' of losing control - God's Spirit must be in control.
To hold back our temper and stay calm, we need to have self-control ahead of time. According to our practical friend, the apostle Paul, this happens only when we allow the Holy Spirit to control our hearts and minds every day.
If you think it's hard to put a 'finger' on self-control, you're right - you can't! That's because it's part of the fruit of The Spirit. God produces this fruit in us when we are consistently abiding in Christ.
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
- Thank God for the practical wisdom He provides in His Word. Confess any way in which you have been responding poorly to "annoying" people and circumstances. Ask His Spirit to take control of your heart and emotions every day. Tell God that you're willing for Him to use life's frustrating situations to teach you self-control, patience and forgiveness. Ask Him to produce the fruit of His Spirit in you. Thank Him that He will use your Godly response as a way to connect your story and His Story to others.
- Make a written list of frustrating situations that make it difficult for you to maintain self-control. It might be a certain relationship, another student at school, a teacher, a pesty little brother or sister, something at your job, frustration with possessions or a lack of them, etc. Place this list where you'll see it every day. Pray for God's Spirit to show you why you get annoyed and how to respond in a way that pleases Him.
- Whenever you eat some fruit, let Jesus remind you to abide in Him and produce the fruit of The Spirit in you.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- Chances are pretty good that you will see someone at school, at work, or on the street 'flip' someone else off. If you are with someone in your storysphere, bring up today's story about Michael Vick and look for the opportunity to talk about your story as it relates to learning self-control.
- Use this DAILYBIDE as a discussion starter with your family, youth group or small group. You could serve "finger" sandwiches and "fruit" for snacks.

Life is but a breath!
A 4th Teenage Girl Dies After Alabama Bus Crash
Another teenage girl died in a hospital today, bringing the death toll to four in the Huntsville, Ala., accident that sent a school bus plunging from an elevated overpass Monday morning.
Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene on Monday and a third died after being taken to a hospital.
The Huntsville police chief, Rex Reynolds, announced that Crystal Renee McCrary ,17, died shortly after noon Central time. He did not know the nature of her injuries.
The announcement came after an official of the NTSB corrected the number of people on the bus. She said there were 41 individuals on the bus, 39 of whom were taken to hospitals and two pronounced dead.
Debbie Hersman, the safety board official, said investigators continued an intensive inquiry today into the cause of the deadly traffic accident. .
Officials appeared to be focusing on an orange 1990 Toyota Corolla that was driven by a student at Lee High School, the school attended by the students on the bus. The car was damaged and found on Monday near the scene of the crash on an off-ramp from Interstate 565 in downtown Huntsville.

Psalm 39:4-5
4 “O Lord, make me know my end
and what is the measure of my days;
let me know how fleeting I am!
5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths,
and my lifetime is as nothing before you.
Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the length of our lives?
It sure seems that David, the writer, was going through an emotional time in his life when he wrote this psalm. Only God knew what was really going on inside David's heart, but we do know this:
- God's Spirit was directing King David to write these holy scriptures for God's glory and for the benefit of all future readers.
- David lived a life of both mountain top and deep valley experiences. He knew first hand the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. God brought him to the place where he understood the temporary in light of the eternal - the earthly in comparison to the heavenly.
Compared to eternity, life is short no matter how long we live. It was especially short for the four teenagers who have died as a result of that horrible school bus crash in Alabama.
You're either a student or someone who is pretty young at heart. If you died tomorrow, others would say your life was too short. When an 85-year-old person dies, his or her life doesn't seem short, but compared to eternity, even their life was but a breath.
If you knew that your 'hourglass' of time would run out in six months, what would you do?
If there is something important you want to do, don't wait. If there is someone who needs to hear that you forgive them or love them, don't put it off. If there is a change that is needed in your spiritual life, trust God now. If there is someone you need to talk to about Jesus, do you really want to wait for a better day?
Life is short - do what is really important in light of eternity!
- Thank God for having the perfect plan for your life, no matter how long or short it may be from an earthly human perspective. Ask His Spirit to give you God's eternal perspective every day. Ask His Spirit to give you the discipline you need to do what is really important.
- Memorize Psalm 39:4 as a reminder to see life from God's perspective.
- For one month, make a "to do" list at the beginning of every week. Then prioritize it as you ask God to show you what is really important.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- Pray for comfort for the family and friends of the four students killed in the school bus crash and for people to be drawn to Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.
- Do you have someone in your 'storysphere' who is close to understanding that the greatest part of God's Story is that He sent Jesus to be our Savior? Invite them over to talk. Tell your friend about how the Alabama school bus accident has impacted you. Ask your friend to share his or her perspective on life after death. Share today's scripture found in Psalm 39:4-5 and what it means to you. Take out an old board game that has an hourglass as a timer. Turn it over and watch the sand (time) run out. Ask your friend how they think the two of you can apply what you are seeing?

Sci-fi wedding!
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' wedding shows the scary truth of a false cult.
And with this cat, I Tom, take thee, Katie
By Peter Popham in Bracciano, Italy
The vigil began early on Saturday morning, with television cameras trained on the road that leads to Bracciano's Odescalchi Castle, paparazzi hanging out of the windows looking down on it and local Tom Cruise fans crammed against the crush barriers, settling in for a long wait.
Towards midday, limousines bearing Roberta Armani, niece of the fashion designer, and the tenor Andrea Bocelli, began arriving. Other guests included Brooke Shields, Richard Gere, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Antony. At about 1.55 pm, as a cloudburst sent the crowd diving for cover, Katie Holmes came up the drive in a limousine with her baby daughter, Suri. Cruise, deposited by helicopter nearby, joined her shortly after 4pm, arriving at the castle in a van and waving to the crowd.
Was it a real wedding? The Roman Catholic church didn't think so. No civil licence had been applied for, so it wasn't a civil marriage either. But amid the euphoria, nobody really cared.
In this version the person officiating, David Miscavige, 45, successor to founder L Ron Hubbard as head of the Church of Scientology, would declare himself confident that "the girl" would "fare full well and staunchly as a wife" and require "the man" to give her "food and tender happiness and frills, a pan, a comb, perhaps a cat".
The wedding services are silent on the core Scientology beliefs, including the one that says an evil galactic warlord called Xenu rounded up 13.5 trillion beings 75 million years ago, flew them to Earth and vaporised them with hydrogen bombs.
The higher wisdom of Scientology is not meant to be cast before "wogs" (as non-Scientologists are known to believers) but is reserved for the highest of the "Operating Thetans" such as Cruise - whose ranks Katie Holmes will no doubt soon join.

1 Corinthians 15:20-23
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:30-34
30 Why are we in danger every hour? 31 I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 34 Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about hanging out with people who deny Jesus Christ and His resurrection?
This one is tough. Paul is very direct. He says that "bad company ruins good morals" and in the NLT it says, "bad company corrupts good character." How do we apply this because we also know that Jesus wants us to love everyone and reach out to them with His Truth.
This does not mean that we shouldn't share the love of Christ with those who deny Him. Jesus has commanded us (His followers) to bring His Good News to the world around us. But are you in danger of beginning to believe what those who don't follow Christ believe? Are you strong enough in true Biblical faith to recognize what is false?
We must be careful about letting others lead us away from Christ or to start opening up our thinking to false teachings rather than God's Word.
In the past, Katie Holmes claimed to be a Christian. Superstar Tom Cruise, a devout follower of the cult called Scientology, led her away from Christ. Now married, they will teach their baby girl, Suri, the lies of a sci-fi cult, which disses the truth, love and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Plus, Tom Cruise is a "messenger" of this false religious cult that has its origin from Satan himself and he would love every young adoring fan to join Scientology.
Do you have any relationships that are keeping you from following Christ and obeying the Truth in His Word?
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
- Thank God that He has given all the evidence needed to prove His existence and love for you by coming to earth in the form of a human being - Jesus Christ! (Not some evil galactic warlord called Xenu some 75 million years ago!) Praise Him for the fact that the resurrection of Christ is the answer now and forever! Confess any way in which you have been letting others who deny Christ to get you messed up spiritually. Thank Jesus for His forgiveness and ask Him to help you rely on Him minute by minute. Ask Him to give you the daily desire to seek God for who He is and in all that you do, by obeying the Truth of His Word.
- Pray every day for God's Spirit to give you the heart you need to love those who deny Christ without being influenced by their false thinking.
- Every day, for at least one week, write down one bit of evidence you see for the reality of Christ's resurrection in your life. The more you recognize God's Truth, the better you'll become at recognizing the lies of the enemy.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- If you're like me, you know that it's not easy to live out God's grace. That's why we must constantly abide in Jesus because then it's His compassion and Truth at work through us! We must take a stand against the flaunting of sinful immorality and false teaching while remembering that Tom and Katie are simply acting out what they believe and in their case - what they don't believe -that God's gift of salvation is in Christ and Christ alone.
- Pray for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to reject the teachings of Scientology and trust Jesus Christ as Savior. Pray that their baby Suri will have the opportunity to know Jesus some day. Can you imagine the impact on our culture if they became Christians? (But you know what? Even if they don't - you can impact culture right where you live!)
- Because so many young people are interested in movies and celebrities, today's story about Tom and Katie's wedding would be a great way to get into a conversation about spiritual beliefs with your friends. Ask them what they think about TomKat's belief in Scientology? Make sure you listen. You will learn more about their story and have the opportunity to share more of your story and maybe even God's Story.

I gotta have it now!
Mob scenes and gun violence mark pre-Christmas launch of Sony's PS3
Sony's PlayStation 3 went on sale in the US yesterday amid mob scenes and gun violence worthy of the shoot-'em-up games available for the much hyped new console.
Robbers held up a line of gamers waiting outside a superstore in Connecticut at 3am yesterday morning, demanding they hand over the $500 they had saved to buy the PS3, and one man was shot when he resisted.
The midnight launch generated queues of people, many of whom had camped outside superstores for days. In West Bend, Wisconsin, a 19-year-old was injured when he ran into a pole while racing with 50 others for one of 10 spots outside a Wal-Mart. In Fresno, California, police were forced to close a Wal-Mart after shoppers fought to get ahead of the queue. And there was a drive-by shooting in Lexington, Kentucky, when a local television reporter was hit with pellets from a toy gun while interviewing waiting gamers.
Many of those who camped out have already pre-sold their consoles, which have been changing hands on eBay at prices above $1,000 - four times their retail cost.
The console is months late and there were still just 400,000 consoles available yesterday. Sony says that it will be able to ship only a million consoles to the United States before Christmas.

Matthew 6:25-33
Do Not Be Anxious
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about earthly possessions?
First of all, Jesus makes it clear that our focus must be on Heavenly values rather than earthly values. If we are obsessed to possess, we will find ourselves empty-handed and needy.
Secondly, Jesus said that the Father knows our needs and will supply them in His way. Can we be patient and trust Him to be our loving Father?
Today's story about the PS3 madness is a vivid illustration of how what people will do when they gotta have something right now! Playing video games is not the problem. In fact, I think if Jesus were walking planet earth today rather than 2000 years ago, He would have fun sitting down and playing a game with you. And...He would beat you...or maybe let you win...that would be a miracle!
Priorities are the problem. Could we be patient for more PS3s to arrive and spend that waiting time in line doing something for someone else? Would we stand in line to show our passion for Christ? If we sold our PS3 for a profit, could we give the extra to someone in need? Just wondering....
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
- Do a little honest evaluation. How are you doing with our culture's perspective of 'the one with the most toys - wins'? What are your priorities on a daily basis? Pleasure or serving? Possessions or giving? The earthly or the heavenly?
- Talk to God right now. Ask your heavenly Father to forgive you for ways in which you have been selfish or impatient about needs and wants. Ask His Spirit to help you depend on Him completely and see your needs and desires from His perspective. Thank your loving Father for His promise to take care of you in a way that He knows is best for you.
- For one month, keep a written record of what you want and buy. Everytime you think of something you want to buy, ask yourself if you really need it or do you just want it? Could the money you spend be used in a better way? Do you think God would be pleased with the purchase? Honestly evaluate your attitude and actions - you might be surprised how this affects you and others!
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- Use this DAILYBIDE as a resource for your youth group or small group to get other followers of Jesus thinking about what He taught in Matthew 6:25-33.
- Email this DAILYBIDE to a friend or family member and then follow it up with a conversation to see what they think?
- Get some friends who need Jesus together to play video games. Look for an opportunity to ask them if they saw today's PS3 story and what they thought about it. Trust Jesus for the nudge to share what you learned in today's DAILYBIDE - it's part of your story.

Will the wicked really get away with it?
In an account his publisher considers a confession and some media executives call revolting, O.J. Simpson plans a book and TV interview to discuss how, hypothetically, he could have killed his ex-wife and her friend.
Denise Brown, sister of Simpson's slain ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, lashed out at the publisher for "promoting the wrongdoing of criminals" and commercializing abuse.
Judith Regan, whose ReganBooks imprint is publishing the book, refused to say what Simpson is being paid for the book but said he came to her with the idea.
"This is an historic case, and I consider this his confession," Regan told The Associated Press.
The former football star was acquitted in 1995 of murdering his ex-wife and her friend Ron Goldman after a trial that became an instant cultural flashpoint.
He was later found liable for the deaths by in a wrongful-death suit filed by the Goldman family. In the years since, he has been mocked relentlessly by late-night comedians, particularly for his vow to hunt down the true killers.
"This is not about being heard. This is about trying to cash in, in a pathetic way, on some notoriety," said Sara Nelson, editor in chief of Publishers Weekly. "That a person keeps wanting to bring this up seems almost nutty to me."
One expert noted that the justice system's protection against double jeopardy means Simpson's book, explosive as it may be, should not expose him to any new legal danger.
"He can write pretty much whatever he wants," said Laurie Levenson, a Loyola University law school professor and former federal prosecutor who has followed the case closely. "Unless he's confessing to killing somebody else, he can probably do this with impunity."

Psalm 10:2-5
2 In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor;
let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised.
3 For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul,
and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord.
4 In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him;
all his thoughts are, “There is no God.”
5 His ways prosper at all times;
your judgments are on high, out of his sight;
as for all his foes, he puffs at them.
Psalm 10:11-14
11 He says in his heart, “God has forgotten,
he has hidden his face, he will never see it.”
12 Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand;
forget not the afflicted.
13 Why does the wicked renounce God
and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”?
14 But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation,
that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless commits himself;
you have been the helper of the fatherless. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about God's response to arrogance and injustice?
The writer of this part of scripture (believed to be David) was struggling with the same concern that we often have - why does it seem that the wicked "get away with it" all the time? Why do the bad guys seem to be winning? Not only that, but they brag about it!
The answer in today's scripture is very clear - although God may seem to be "looking the other way" at times, we can be assurred that He is aware of every injustice. God is Holy and just. According to His Word, God hates the evil actions of the wicked and they will be punished, in spite of the fact that they usually believe they can "get away with it".
I realize that someone reading this might object to my using O.J. as an example, because he was acquitted during his trial. I understand, but our system of justice fails sometimes. The evidence against O.J. was overwhelming and his arrogance since the trial and his current evil actions cry out for God's justice.
That's why today's scripture is so important for us to remember and apply. God listen to the cries of the helpless. Eventually, because God knows every evil deed, His justice will be served. In God's time...
Be encouraged. God takes care of His followers. We can face the wicked and evil when we abide in the strength and grace of Christ.
How can you connect today's God's Story to your life?
- Talk to God right now. Are you feeling overwhelmed by the evil in our world? Are you experiencing some evil actions or attitudes directed toward you? Let your loving Heavenly Father listen to your cries.....His Spirit will encourage you and lift you up....
- Whenever you read or see the news on television or the internet and it seems that evil is running rampant, take a deep breath and remember that every breath that every living being takes, is a gift from God. He is in complete control. He loves you. He is just.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story, and your story to others?
- If you are a teenager, this O.J. story took place when you were just a little kid. Keep in mind that the reason our nation remembers it so well, is because it is a story of a celebrity, incredible horror, and a seemingly great injustice. So, be ready to use the Truth of today's scripture. This O.J. story will be a hot topic in the news for a few weeks and it will probably come up in conversations at home, at school and in the work place. See it as another opportunity to learn the stories of others (as they express their opinions), share your own story and connect it to the Truth of God's Story.
- Pray for O.J. to recognize his sinfulness and come to God for forgiveness. Yes, this is part of God's Story. Though the Holy, just God punishes the wicked, His grace and mercy mean that He would forgive O.J. if he received Jesus Christ as His Savior. Amazing!

Dangerous impostors!
Five Iraqi police officers held over Baghdad kidnappings
Five senior Iraqi police officers were arrested tonight after gunmen in police uniforms seized scores of people at a prominent scientific research institute in Baghdad in an audacious operation that underlined the lawlessness permeating the Iraqi capital and the threat it poses to the country's tottering education system.
As many as 80 armed men took part in the morning attack, which netted academics, employees and visitors to the ministry of higher education's scientific research, scholarships and cultural relations directorate, situated in Baghdad's relatively peaceful Karrada district.
Major General Jalil Khalaf, the interior ministry spokesman, said those arrested included the police chief for Karrada. Also held were the commander of the police brigade in charge of the area and three other officers, he added. The gunmen were wearing interior ministry commando uniforms specifically designed to prevent counterfeiting.
According to police sources and witnesses, the gunmen arrived in more than 20 pick-up trucks and sports utility vehicles and sealed off the approaches to the building. Several cars approached the ministry's checkpoint and reportedly told guards they were part of an advance group from the interior ministry conducting a security sweep ahead of a visit by the US ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad.
Insurgents, criminal gangs, and militias have frequently carried out attacks while posing as Iraqi security officers, and the security forces themselves have been heavily infiltrated.

2 Timothy 3:12-16
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the kind of attacks we face as followers of Christ?
First of all, Paul warns Timothy and us that if we are serious about living a godly life for Jesus Christ, we will face persecution. The enemy will use ungodly people to attack anyone who stands up for God's Truth. So be encouraged if you are being criticized! Another question to think about is if you are not suffering any kind of persecution - why not?
Secondly, Paul is telling Christ's followers to be alert for impostors of the Christian faith. They are really false teachers who are trying to infiltrate our minds and our ranks with ideas that sound like they could be right, but are deceitful tricks of Satan.
For example, have you heard concepts like:
- A loving God would never send anyone to hell
- Abortion isn't wrong, because it's simply a personal choice
- Homosexuality is not a sin because how could so many people be wrong?
- To believe in Christ as the only way to Heaven is intolerant of other religions
The tragic news in Iraq today is a reminder of how deceitful the enemy can be. Iraqi citizens were deceived by impostors who had posed as security officers. Innocent people were taken hostage by the enemy acting like someone who would protect them.
Our world is full of religious sounding people who are false teachers according to God's Word. How can we make sure that we are not taken hostage by their deceitful perspectives?
We must spend time every day studying God's Word, which is absolute Truth. Reflect on it. Trust it. Apply it. Live it.
- Thank God for His Holy Word which is absolutely true! Ask God's Spirit to give you the desire and discipline to make it the foundation of who you are, how you think, and the way you live. Ask His Spirit to guard your mind and heart from the impostors that Satan sends your way to infiltrate your mind. Thank Jesus that He will provide the courage you need to face persecution and the heart you need to keep loving those you attack you for living a Biblical faith.
- Every day, pray for God's Spirit to make you alert to the attacks of the enemy.
- Whenever you see another report of the war in Iraq, pray for God's strength to give you the victory in the spiritual battle for Truth.
- For one month, keep a list in your journal of the false teachings that the religious culture wants you to believe. Pray for those impostors of the Truth.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story and your story to the lives of others?
- Pray for friends and family who need Jesus to see His Truth lived out in your life.
- Study the Truth of God's Word so that when the lies of Satan come up in conversation with others, you will be able to talk about God's Truth. But remember to do it with a heart of love, not an attitude of judgement.
- Start a Bible study with your friends or bring them to your youth group or small group so that they can experience God's Truth in an atmosphere of caring relationships. This will provide an ongoing opportunity to learn their stories and share more of your story.

That's not cool!
Police nab suspect in air conditioner

Houston - A burglary suspect tried something very uncool, trying to hide in an air conditioning unit at a Houston shooping center on Monday.
At first, officers who responded to the burglar alarm couldn't find anyone. But, they later noticed the man atop the building and summoned a ladder truck.
Officer John Dickerson said the suspect was nabbed inside an air conditioning unit. Copper wire was stripped from several other industrial AC units at the complex.
Charges are pending.

1 Timothy 6:6-10
6 Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the danger of craving money?
Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE answers the question this way:
6:6-10 Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, most people still believe that money brings happiness. Rich people craving greater riches can be caught in an endless cycle that only ends in ruin and destruction. How can you keep away from the love of money? Paul gives us some guidelines: (1) Realize that one day riches will all be gone (6:7;17); (2) be content with what you have (6:8); (3) monitor what you are willing to do to get more money (6:9,10); (4) love people more than money (6:11); (5) love God's work more than money (6:11); (6) freely share what you have with others (6:18).
Remember, if you are craving money more than God and His Kingdom, you'll fall into a trap and get caught...and that's not cool!
- Thank your Heavenly Father that He promises to meet your needs. Confess to Him any recent times of craving your "wants" more than what He wants for you. Ask His Spirit to give you God's Kingdom perspective rather than this world's perspective on what is truly valuable now and for eternity.
- For one month, pray every day for God to teach you His perspective on money rather than what our culture teaches you.
- Using your journal, checkbook, credit card report (any that apply) look over your spending habits and giving habits over a three-month period to evaluate if you are honoring God or yourself?
- Whenever you see an air conditioner this week, let God remind you to avoid this world's money trap.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- Use today's DAILYBIDE as a topic for discussion in your youth group or small group.
- Look for an opportunity in your conversations with friends to talk about what you are learning about the danger of making money your main focus in life. This is part of your story of your life in Christ. Remember to share with humility rather than trying to judge others who may have an obsession for possessions.

What does an atheist believe?
God's Word says this man is a fool!
Atheist firebrand
Psalm 14:1-2
The Fool Says, There Is No God
To the choirmaster. Of David.
14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds,
there is none who does good.
2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about believing His existence?
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."
I think this is pretty clear. What do you think?
Today's story about the views of Mr. Dawkins, the atheist, illustrates how foolish it is to say there is no God.
A real atheist is either a fool or wicked - and sometimes both! An atheist is a fool because he is denying the proof that God exists. Wicked? Yes, because he or she is not only refusing to live according to God's truths, but leading others away from the truth of God. BUT, God loves fools so much, that He wants them to become Christ's followers!
Is it possible that sometimes we live as though we are atheists? We may never say that there is no God, but David is writing about people who "say" this in their hearts.
As Christians, we live as atheists when we rely on ourselves rather than depending on Jesus. Some people practice atheism all week, except for one hour at a church on Sunday morning.
- Thank God that He has given all the evidence needed to prove His existence and love for you by coming to earth in the form of a human being - Jesus Christ! Confess any way in which you have been living as an atheist lately. Thank Jesus for His forgiveness and ask Him to help you rely on Him minute by minute. Ask Him to give you the daily desire to seek God for who He is and in all that you do.
- Every day, for at least one week (or for one month!) write down one bit of evidence you see for God's existence.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story and your story to others?
- Pray that Mr. Dawkins, the atheist in today's story, will recognize God's existence and become a follower of Jesus.
- Pray in the same way for anyone you know who might be an atheist or at least trying to talk like one.
- Use the journaling challenge (see above) to be ready with lots of examples of how God's Story and your story have connected as you learn the stories of others. But remember, relationships are more effective than debates. Someone who does not believe in God's existence may get their eyes opened as they notice something unique about your "story".

What would Jesus say to Britney Spears?
Marriage and divorce would be part of the conversation.
Britney Spears files for divorce from Federline
Pop princess Britney Spears has dumped her husband, wannabe-rapper Kevin Federline, according to court documents obtained Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Superior Court filing cites "irreconcilable differences,'' court spokeswoman Kathy Roberts told The Associated Press.
In the divorce papers, which do not mention a prenuptial agreement, Spears asks for custody of the couple's two children, with visitation rights for Federline. The filing does list as separate property, and thereby off-limits to Federline, "miscellaneous jewelry and other personal affects,'' earnings and other assets to be determined later.
Etalk gossip blogger Elaine (Lainey) Lui believes the divorce is a good move for the pop star. "There is probably no other couple in showbiz who are as hated as them... He's been seen as a gold-digger, an opportunist, using her to further his own career."
The aspiring rapper, derided in the tabloids as Mr. Britney Spears, insisted that his claim for fame is genuine.
Spears and Federline have a one-year-old son, Sean Preston, as well as an infant son who was born Sept. 12.
Federline also has two children from ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson, who was pregnant with their second child when he left her for Spears.

Matthew 5:31-32
Divorce
31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about marriage and divorce?
Jesus makes it very clear that God intends marriage to be a lifetime commitment. Obviously, Britney's first marriage, which lasted 55 hours, and her marriage to Federline were not lifetime commitments.
Jesus said that a sexually immoral life-style (not a sinful act that is forgiven through repentance and confession), makes divorce permissible. A man and a woman should always strive to forgive and see their marriage restored. God expects married people to look for ways to stay together rather than excuses to divorce.
So what would Jesus say to Britney?
According to God's Word, Jesus views Britney's marriages as sinful. BUT, Jesus (through the Scriptures and His Spirit) tells Britney that He loves her unconditionally and that He desires for her to come to Him for forgiveness. Jesus offers Britney a new life if she will follow Him completely.
We should never take a light-hearted approach to marriage. If you're a teenager, the choices you make now about dating and commitment in a relationship will affect you the rest of your life.
- Thank God for His sacred plan of marriage between a man and woman. Ask Him to help you establish His idea for marriage in your mind and heart. If you are already married, thank Him for your spouse and ask His Spirit to help you love your spouse in a way that honors God.
- Pray regularly for God to help you trust Him completely with His plan for you regarding marriage.
- If you are a teenager and in a relationship that is not pleasing to God, ask God to help you get out of it and focus on a growing relationship with Christ.
- If you are married and struggling, go to a friend who follows Christ and cares for you. Ask for help.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story and your story to others?
- Pray for Britney Spears and Kevin Federline. Pray that they will come to know Christ as their Savior and understand God's plan for marriage.
- As this Hollywood celebrity story comes up in conversation, ask those in your storysphere about their view on marriage and divorce. Listen carefully. If Jesus nudges you...ask them what they think Jesus might say to Britney Spears? Listen carefully. If Jesus nudges you...share what you learned in today's DAILYBIDE.

Obey the government?
PA voter charged for his smashing vote!
An Allentown, Pa., man told police he smashed an electronic voting machine with a metal cat paperweight because he didn't like Republicans.
"He smashed it with the cat's ears," poll volunteer Jim Govostis told the Allentown Morning Call.
Witnesses said a man, identified as 43-year-old Michael Young, entered the polling station at a nursing home, calmly showed his identification and went the machine and smashed its screen.
A source told the newspaper the man is a registered independent voter and said he believed Republicans were conspiring to steal his vote.
"The good news is that even though the machine is broken, the votes are not lost on the memory card. They have them in custody at the voter registration office," Lehigh County, Pa., Board of Elections Chief Clerk Stacy Sterner told the Morning Call.
After the incident, the man sat calmly and awaited police.
Young has been charged with felony criminal mischief and tampering with voting machines, Allentown police said.

Romans 13:1-2
Submission to the Authorities
13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about God's involvement in earthly government?
Too bad the voting machine vandal didn't read today's scripture just before he went to vote. Talk about voter rage!
Actually, all of us need to take today's scripture to heart, regardless of how we feel about the results of the elections this week.
At first glance, you might think that God places government leaders in power if they are Christian or at least moral people. But no...Paul is saying that all are in place because of God's ultimate will. Remember that Paul is writing this to Christians living in Rome under the horrible rule of the Roman Empire - they're the ones who fed Christians to lions for lunch. (The Romans might have used Republicans for a snack and Democrats for dessert!)
God has a "big picture" plan that requires everyone to make a decision about Jesus. He also uses earthly circumstances and authorities to bring us to depend on Him in the process of becoming more like Christ. This includes the need for us to obey earthly government unless it requires us to disobey the truth taught in the Bible.
Though most of you were too young to vote this week and more concerned about homework, sports, or some girl or guy, you still need to understand and apply today's Biblical truth for the future. It starts with the right attitude now.
So, no matter how you feel about the result of the elections, remember that God is in complete control. For those of us who follow Christ, think of the peace and confidence this should give us as we strive to honor God by being Godly citizens.
How can you connect today's God's Story to your life?
- Thank God for being in complete control of what happens in our lives. Pray for President Bush and all other elected officals by using Paul's words in 1st Timothy 2:1-2, "I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. As you make your requests, plead for God's mercy upon them, and give thanks. Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity."
- Pray that all of our leaders in government (current or the new ones) will put their hope and trust in God.
- Pray that God will bring unity to our divided country.
- Pray that God will help you to be an example to the world by being a Christ-like citizen.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story and your story to others?
Today's story about the guy smashing the voting machine could be a fun way to connect the three stories. Ask those in your storysphere if they get mad at the government or if they ever feel like our nation's future is hopeless? You can use today's scripture to talk about your story - that because you know God is in control (government included), you have peace and hope about the future, no matter what.

Did you vote?
America chooses new leaders
Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 12 years Tuesday night and made strong gains in the Senate, according to NBC News projections. Democrats cast the results as a sharp rebuke to President Bush and promised big changes in Washington.
In tightly contested races being watched closely for their indication of the national mood, Democrats were all but running the board. Projections by The Associated Press at 11 p.m. ET showed the Democrats’ picking up 19 seats in the House, more than the 15 they needed to regain control and install Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California as the nation’s first female speaker.
After voting with his wife, Laura, and an “I voted” sticker on his jacket lapel, President Bush said, “No matter what your party affiliation or if you don’t have a party affiliation, do your duty, cast your ballot and let your voice be heard.”
With Bush’s approval ratings low and the Iraq war unpopular, Republicans conceded in advance that Democrats would gain at least some seats in Congress, as well as in statehouses across the country.

Joshua 24:13-24
13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’
Choose Whom You Will Serve
14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, 17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
19 But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” 21 And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.” 22 Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.” (ESV)
What are some lessons in today's scripture that should bring us to the point of choosing to obey and serve God every day?
There's a bunch to think about, but let's keep it simple and ask God to:
- help us remember His faithfulness and love to us - we can trust Him.
- convict us of the "idols" in our lives - He alone is worthy of our worship!
- give us the strength to be leaders - by taking a stand for His Truth!
- forgive our nation - because we have turned against Him.
- empower us to choose to obey and serve Him alone - for He is the Lord God!
Today, whether you are a young teenager and were not able to vote yet, or if you did vote, remember that we have an even more important choice to make every day. WE MUST CHOOSE TO SERVE THE LORD GOD AND OBEY HIM ALONE!
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
Thank God that He is in control of all events. The results of the election do not surprise Him. Thank God for His scriptural Truth which instructs you to obey Him and serve Him.
Confess any way in which you have been choosing to serve yourself rather than the Lord. Confess any way in which you have been ignoring God's faithfulness in your life. Let Him know right now that today you are choosing to obey Him and Him alone. Ask Jesus to remind you to make the same choice tomorrow, the next day....
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
Yesterday, America chose many elected officials. Pray that those who were elected will apply the truths of today's passage, no matter their political views.
every time you hear an update on the election today, let it remind you to choose Christ in every part of your life.
remember that you will be more effective in connecting your story and God's Story to others by being an example of Christ's love and scriptural Truth rather than arguing some political view.

Sentenced to die!
Iraqi joy at Saddam sentence
Iraqis in Shi'ite towns and parts of Baghdad poured into the streets after Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death for war crimes.
Following the televised hearing there was dancing and yelling for joy at the fate of the man who oppressed them for three decades.
"The court has delivered justice for my son, who was killed by Saddam," housewife Um Hussain said in the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf as crowds chanted "Death to Saddam! Die you Baathists!"
However, in Saddam's Sunni home town of Tikrit, dozens of men and boys waved his portrait and chanted the old Baath party slogan "Saddam, Saddam! I give my life and blood for you, Saddam!"
The court rejected his demand for an "honourable" death by military firing squad. Instead, the former Iraqi dictator was sentenced to go to the gallows as a common criminal for the 1982 massacre of 148 people in retaliation for a bungled assassination bid.
As the verdict was delivered, a visibly shaken Saddam shouted: "God is greatest! Long live the nation!"
The judgment came as Iraq braced for new outbreaks of violence. All leave was cancelled for the Iraqi Army, and Baghdad was sealed off.
Baghdad's Shiite-led Government welcomed the verdict. "This is the least Saddam deserved," said Ali al-Dabbagh, spokesman for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
Saddam was defiant before the verdict.
"I will die with honour and with no fear, with pride for my country and my Arab nation, but the US occupiers will leave in humiliation and defeat," his lawyers quoted him as saying.
Proverbs 10:24
24 What the wicked dreads will come upon him,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the fear of death?
Tyndale's LIFE APPLICATION STUDY BIBLE notes provide this insight:
10:24 The wicked person dreads death. Those who do not believe in God usually fear death, and with good reason. By contrast, believers desire eternal life and God's salvation - their hopes will be rewarded. This verse offers a choice: You can have either your fears or your hopes come true. You make that choice by rejecting God and living your own way or by accepting God and following Him.
Do you believe that Saddam is not afraid to die? There is no doubt that his heart is hard because he has believed the lies of Satan, concerning "Allah". I believe that deep down in his soul, Saddam is wondering about his eternal destination.
How about you? Do you fear death or do you have peace, knowing that in Christ, your eternal destination is secure?
How can you connect today's verse, which is part of God's Story, to your life?
- Praise God for the peace He provides you in facing death. Thank Him that because Christ died for your sins and rose from the dead, you can know that your eternal hope in heaven is a promise that your loving Heavenly Father will keep.
- Remember today's verse as you continue to watch world events unfold.
How can you connect today's story, God's Story and your story to others?
- Pray for Saddam Hussein to turn to the living God and receive Christ as his Savior before he is executed. Yes, God's grace is big enough to save Saddam and change the final outcome of his eternal story. (Imagine the impact on our world, which is caught up in Jihad, if Saddam became a follower of Jesus before justice is carried out.)

Faith without the cross?
You can't have Jesus without His cross!
College removes cross from chapel!
The cross from the altar area of the chapel at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., has been removed to ensure the space is seen as a nondenominational area, explains administrator Melissa Engimann.
"In order to make the Wren Chapel less of a faith-specific space, and to make it more welcoming to students, faculty, staff and visitors of all faiths, the cross has been removed from the altar area," Engimann announced in an e-mail to staff.
The cross will be returned to the altar for those who wish to use it for events, services or private prayer, the campus newspaper, the Flat Hat, reported.
The college was formerly associated with the Anglican Church. Since 1906, the college has been non-denominational and publicly supported. Though the cross will be removed, the room will still be considered a chapel, college officials said.

1 Corinthians 1:17-19
17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the importance of Christ's cross?
Let's get to the bottom line right away - without the cross of Jesus, there is no God's Story! If there's no cross, there's no sacrifice. If there's no sacrifice, there's no Savior. If there's no Savior, there's no forgiveness. If there's no forgiveness, there's no hope. If there's no hope, there's no reason to live. If there's no reason to live, there's no story of a loving God Who sent His only Son to rescue us!
God is telling us (through the words His Spirit gave Paul) that His Story of love is more important than the storyteller. We don't have to be a persuasive communicator with great knowledge and skill. The power comes from God through the message of Christ's cross.
The world doesn't think with God's perspective, so the story of the cross will seem foolish to them. Love...grace...gift...faith...trust...new life...seems too simple...
This is what 3Story is all about! As we abide in Christ....we will love others...learn their stories...share our story...connect them to God's Story...which doesn't happen without Christ's cross...and the empty tomb!
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
- Spend a few minutes right now in prayer and worship. Let Jesus remind you that about 2000 years ago, He literally hung and died on a cross for you...for your sins...because He loves you....listen to His Spirit and respond...
- Hopefully you will fellowship and worship with other followers of Jesus this weekend. Wherever and whatever the setting, look for visual reminders of the cross. Listen for words and music and stories about the cross. Think about Christ's cross. Afterwards, write down how the reality of Christ's cross impacted you. Try to take time on a regular basis to let the amazing story of Christ's cross impact you in a fresh way.
How can we connect today's story, God's Story and our story to others?
- Remember to let Jesus give you His compassion for others. It can be tempting to get upset with friends and family who are trapped in this world's secular perspective. It's easy to just give up on them becasue they are "foolish" when it comes to Christ's cross. With Christ's love and grace, you can be full of God's "wisdom" as He helps you connect the stories.
- With those in your storysphere who are comfortable with you sharing some of your story, you might ask questions like: WHY DO YOU THINK SO MANY PEOPLE WEAR A CROSS OF SOME KIND? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU SEE A CROSS? DO YOU THINK JESUS WOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MUCH IF HE HAD NEVER DIED ON THE CROSS? WHY OR WHY NOT? MAY I SHARE WITH YOU WHAT CHRIST'S CROSS MEANS TO ME?

Keeping it all together?
Man builds 3,300-pound rubber band ball
EUGENE, Ore. - With all due respect to The Spinners and T.I., prepare yourself for the new rubber-band man. Steve Milton, through concentration and perseverance, has created a 3,300-pound ball comprised of rubber bands. His creation measures almost 5 feet tall and takes up half his two-car garage. Though it's not official, the 26-year-old Eugene man believes he has broken the record for the heaviest such ball, eclipsing John Bain's mark of 3,120 pounds. The Wilmington, Del., man's record has stood for eight years.
Milton has posted updates of his ball's growing girth on his MySpace page. He's also uploaded videos of the ball crushing things, such as using a forklift to drop the ball on an old van.
"It was awesome," Milton told The Register-Guard newspaper. "It completely flattened the roof and blew the doors off."
Milton started building the ball last November. He bought rubber bands at retail stores and then started purchasing in bulk from the Pennsylvania-based Dykema Rubber Band Company.
Dykema president Lou McKibben said he realized Milton was serious when he got an order for 1,000 pounds of 12-inch rubber bands. He cut him a deal on the remaining 2,000 pounds.
Milton, who wants to stretch the ball at least another 1,000 pounds, said the work isn't all that safe. Milton is careful to keep the ball contained with blocks of wood so it doesn't roll away. He wears gloves to avoid burning his hands from friction and learned to move when a band breaks.
"If they snap they come off pretty fast," he said. "They've given me welts before."

Colossians 1:15-17
The Preeminence of Christ
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (ESV)
What does today's God's Story teach us about the connection between Christ and creation?
When I saw today's story about the guy creating the gihugic ball of rubber bands, I was impressed. At first we might wonder why anyone would do this? Does he have a real life or job? Then when you think about it, you wonder what holds it together? (I can hardly get four rubber bands to stay together!)
Then I got to thinking about planet earth being like a gihugic ball and maybe you're like me - I get blown away at how this mass of life holds together!
This is what today's scripture is all about! Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God - He created everything and He holds everything together by His power. All of creation, including us, was made for God's purposes and pleasure.
Why did the "rubber band man" create that big ball? Because he wanted to and he could! Plus, he enjoys being noticed.
Why did Christ create the world and you and me? Because He wanted to and He could! Plus, He enjoys us and He wants the world to notice His glory!
Since Christ holds everything together, we can not be independent from Him. Our response must be to daily trust Him for protection and for direction. Jesus will hold us together as we abide in Him. This obedience brings Christ glory.
Let's finish with the rubber band analagy: when you feel like life is stretching you to the max and maybe you've snapped a few times, remember that Christ will keep holding you together!
How can we connect today's God's Story to our lives?
- Talk to Jesus right now. Confess to Him your lack of trust in Him when life is stretching you. Ask Jesus to give you the faith you need to live in the reality of the truth that He holds everything together.
- Every day, thank Jesus that "all things were created through Him and for Him".
- Start your own rubber band ball creation as a reminder to trust Christ to keep holding your life together.
